Question about GMC Suburban

1 Answer

The check engine light stays on. When I connect the computer it says it is the gas cap or the EGR. I put a new gas cap on. Check engin light stays on. How difficult is it to replace the EGR valve?

Thanks for the info. I have done the reset thing several times. How do I get at the EGR? Where is it located? I had a 1991 Suburban and the EGR actually went out completely on a trip. My understanding it under the valve cover, is that true on a 1999?

I already replaced the little emissions pcv valve on the valve cover already. The PCV just pulls straight out from the valve cover and connects to a hose. The EGR valve went out on my 91 Suburban on a trip and it was hard keeping the engine even idling. As far as I remember they had to do something more than the PCV. I know it cost almost $200. It couldn't have been a $5 part at a reputable Chevrolet dealer.

Its easy too replace but you need too reset your cmputer first too see if the light stays out before you go and buy the egr valve
disconnect the pos side of the battery for 5 min that will reset the computer,if the light comes back on then get the egr valve then you will have too reset it again

Check engine light on my Ford escape.

I would say, check the plug of the EGR. Check for holes in the gas filler tube, top of the tank or in the vacuum lines that run to the purge canister. You can also check for information on the purge solenoid.
A bad gas cap can cause this too.

Go to any of the Parts Retailers in your area and they will check the code for you and tell you what they believe the trouble is.

Check your gas cap. If the gas cap is night fitted tightly, it can cause the service light to stay on.

Got numerous "tighten gas cap" messages. finally

computer is seeing a large evap leak. most common cause is gas cap left loose this is why it is throwing up that message. since you have already done that we know there is a leak somewhere else. look underr vehicle and should see a black rectangular box close to gas tank this is the evap canister check the lines hooked to this and just do a visual inspection of hoses see if one has come off. may need to have it checked out we have a machine that hooks into system and pressurizes with "smoke" the smoke leaks out of the problem area and helps diagnose .

check your gas cap. If you fill your gas while the vehicle is running, it will also cause your light to come on. Go to OReilys or Autozone and they will shut it off for free and tell you the problem

Check engine light/gas cap will not stay tight.

Yes, the gas cap will cause the Check Engine Light to come on. Will set code P0441 if I remember correctly. It should be okay to drive it. If you would like to confirm the code, take the truck to an auto parts store like Autozone and have them hook up their scan tool and read the code. If its P0441 it will probably be something like EVAP or Evaporative system leak.

Its an easy enough fix while your there too, just pick up a new gas cap or you could pick up an OEM one from the dealership.
