Need help setting the timing

I'm trying to set the timing on an 1987 firebird v6. I located several different lines on the harmonic balancer, which is the correct one for timing? Also, how do I know when its on compression stroke?

The main timing mark on the pulley usually runs all the way across it. Connect timing light to #1 plug wire...You don"t need to know when on compression stroke! If you need to know for another reason, remove the valve cover and watch rockers on #1 cylinder. Compression stroke happens right after #1 intake valve closes. (both rockers "at rest" at top of stroke.)

Where is the water pump located in a 1999 Chrysler Sebring 2.5 V6

It is located directly above your harmonic balancer. It should be a smaller pulley that is turned by the serpentine bet.

As for replacement,
-you will need to have a socket set,
A Half inch drive breaker bar, putty knife, 800-1000 grit sand paper,

Chevy 454 1984 vintage in motor home cannot find the timing line on the harmonic bal;ancer. Also the engine appears to have two timing brackets one on towards the bottom of engine the other one towar

I believe yours has the timing marks on the balancer, one mark has a 0, the others are at 2 degrees front and back.. Use sand paper and clean up the balancer. The needle on the left is what you strobe. The bottom is for static timing, Which I have never done.

The TDC mark on the "Harmonic" balancer is a white line. It is located on the thick metal part of the balancer nearest to the engine block.

What drives the oil pump on a '97 Pontiac Grand Prix 3.1L V6?

I don't think you can damage the oil pump gear when torquing the harmonic balancer. Oil Pump Removal & Installation 3.1L & 3.4L Engine To Remove:
  1. Remove the oil pan.
  2. Remove the oil pump.
  3. Remove the drive shaft extension.

Crankshaft Position Sensor

The crank sensor is on the front of your engine behind the harmonic balancer. You will need a balancer puller for a 3.8 and a crank sensor alignment tool to do this lob.

Cant find the ignition timing on the 1987 chevy suburban...where is it located?

Maybe I should explain a little more. The timing chain cover is behind the water pump. the harmonic balancer is behind the lower set of pulleys in the center of the engine. If you look on the balancer there will be a mark running across it. You may have to rotate it to find it. The tab on the timing chain cover will have a few marks on it. Like 0,2,4 you should be able to see the tab looking down from the drivers side or looking down behind the water pump.

Greetings!
Further to Tinkertoys1's note...

Yes, the harmonic balancer is manufactured to only fit on one way.
Now, knowing this, the harmonic balancer has a timing mark set into the outside area of the balancer.

Cheers, Jay
