Question about Pontiac Firebird
I'm trying to set the timing on an 1987 firebird v6. I located several different lines on the harmonic balancer, which is the correct one for timing? Also, how do I know when its on compression stroke?
The main timing mark on the pulley usually runs all the way across it. Connect timing light to #1 plug wire...You don"t need to know when on compression stroke! If you need to know for another reason, remove the valve cover and watch rockers on #1 cylinder. Compression stroke happens right after #1 intake valve closes. (both rockers "at rest" at top of stroke.)
