The Caliper Adjustment Lever is what adjusts the caliper - ensuring the brakes pads are in proper placement to the rotor for effective braking. The lever must be cycled in order to keep the calipers adjusted properly. The only way the lever is cycled, is by the usage of the e-brake.




Remove the cable from the Caliper Lever. Be careful when handling and removing the spring.

Initial testing: After you have removed the ebrake cable - kneel in front of the rotor and give it a gentle shake (as if you were removing it). Do you notice any PLAY between the pads & rotor?? Make note of this.

To Remove:

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of
   this section.
   
2. Remove or disconnect the following:
   
   
   
   • Front wheel
     
   • Clip, 2 caliper pins, the anti-rattle spring then remove the 2 brake pads
     and the 4 anti-squeal shims

To Install:

CAUTION
Only replace brake pads on 1 side of the
vehicle at a time. Failure to use this procedure could cause the caliper pistons
on the opposite side of the vehicle to pop out requiring the reconditioning or
replacement of the brake caliper.

1. Remove a small amount of brake fluid from the master cylinder.
   
2. Install a used brake pad into the caliper and compress the caliper pistons.
   
3. Apply disc brake grease to both sides of the inner anti-squeal shims.
   
4. Install or connect the following:
   
   
   
   • Anti-squeal shims to the new brake pads
     NOTE: When replacing worn pads, the anti-squeal shims must be replaced
     together with the pads.
     
     
   • 2 brake pads
     
   • Anti-rattle spring and the 2 caliper pins
     
   • Clip
     
   • Front wheel
   
   
5. Depress the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads.
   
6. Check the brake fluid level and top off as needed.

Rear
To Remove:

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of
   this section.
   
2. Remove or disconnect the following:
   
   
   
   • Rear wheel
     
     
     
     
     
     
     
     
     
     
     
   • 2 cylinder slide pins from rear caliper assembly
     
   • Caliper assembly from rear caliper mounting
     
   • 2 brake pads with anti-squeal shims from rear caliper mounting
     
   • 2 anti-squeal shims from each disc brake pads
     
   • Pad wear indicator plate from the inner side disc brake pad
     
   • 4 pad support plates from the rear caliper mounting

To Install:

1. Install or connect the following:
   
   
   
   • 4 pad support plates on the rear caliper mounting
     
   • Pad wear indicator plate on the inside brake pad
     Note: Install the pad wear indicator facing downward.
     
     
   • Anti-squeal shims on each brake pad
     
   • 2 disc brake pads with anti-squeal shims to the caliper assembly
   
   
2. Apply lithium soap base glycol grease to the sliding part of 2 caliper slide
   pins.
   
3. Install or connect the following:
   
   
   
   • Disc brake caliper assembly with 2 caliper slide pins
     
   • Torque to 65 ft-lbs (88 Nm)
     
   • Rear wheel
   
   
4. Depress the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads.
   
5. Check the brake fluid level and top off as needed.

To Remove:

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of
   this section.
   
2. Remove or disconnect the following:
   
   
   
   • Front wheel
     
   • Front brake caliper assembly
   
   
3. Make matchmarks on the disc and the axle hub.
   
4. Remove the front disc.

To Install:

1. Align matchmarks and disc onto axle hub.
   
2. Install or connect the following:
   
   
   
   • Front brake caliper assembly with the 2 bolts
     
     
     
     1. Torque to 90 ft-lbs (123 Nm)
     
     
   • Front wheel

Brake Pads are an important part of your Mazda6's braking system. They are the replaceable friction pads that pinch the brake disc or drum when the brakes are applied. You should replace the brake pads before they wear beyond a quarter inch or risk damaging your Mazda6's brake discs.

Instructions
Remove the old Brake Pads

1. Step 1 Park your car on a level surface. If you have a stick shift car, make sure the car is in gear. Do not set the parking brake. Place blocks in front of the front tires so the car does not move while you are working on it.
   
2. Step 2 Open the hood of your car. Locate the master cylinder and brake fluid container. If necessary, remove brake fluid until the level in the container is less than half full. A turkey baster is a good tool for this. Put the brake fluid in the plastic container and dispose of it the way you dispose of motor oil.
   
3. Step 3 Raise the rear end of your car with your car jack. Remove the rear tire or wheel assembly.
   
4. Step 4 Disconnect the parking brake cable from the brake caliper. The cable is usually held in place with a retaining clip. You can use pliers to remove the clip and disconnect the cable.
   
5. Step 5 Remove the upper caliper bolt. Rotate the caliper downward until you can comfortably work on it. Remove the springs, pads and shims from the caliper.
   


Install the new Brake Pads
6. Step 1 Use the recommended tool to press the caliper piston back into the piston assembly.
   
7. Step 2 Insert the shims, springs and new pads into the caliper. Reconnect the parking brake cable.
   
8. Step 3 Rotate the caliper upward and back into place. Use the socket wrench to tighten the upper mounting bolt to 27 to 36 foot lb. (37 to 49 Nm) if you have a Mazda6 or to 16 to 23 foot lb. (21 to 31 Nm) if you have a Mazdaspeed6.
   
9. Step 4 Replace the tire wheel assembly. Lower the car to the ground.
   
10. Step 5 Add fluid to the master cylinder container to replace any you removed before you removed the old brake pads.
    
11. Step 6 Season the brake pads by making only gentle stops when you are driving for the first week after you install the new brake pads. Try not to do any hard stopping when you are seasoning the brakes.

1. WARNING: Asbestos fiber dust may be present on brake and clutch assemblies and is hazardous to health if inhaled.
   
   Brake and clutch assemblies should be cleaned using a vacuum cleaner recommended for use with asbestos fibers such as brake/clutch/service vacuum. The bag must be labeled per osha instructions, sealed, and the trash hauler notified as to the bag's contents.
   
   If a vacuum suitable for asbestos is not available, cleaning should be done wet. If dust generation is still possible, technicians should wear government-approved toxic dust purifying respirators.
   

1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2.Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
3.Remove the W-spring.


4.Remove the M-spring.

5.Remove the disc brake caliper locating pins (2B296). 6.Remove the front disc brake pads and shims from the disc brake caliper (2B120).

7.Compress the caliper piston completely into its BORE NOTE: Apply a thin layer of Silicone Brake Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound D7AZ-19A331-A Motorcraft WA-10 or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M1C171-A to both sides of the perforated shim only.

caliper bolts are 7 mm Torx head.

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION Brake Pads Removal
CAUTION: If brake fluid is spilt on the paintwork, the affected area must be immediately washed down with cold water.

1. Loosen the wheel nuts.

1. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02 .

1. Remove the wheel.

1. Detach the brake hose from the support bracket.

1. Detach the outer brake pad retaining clip.

1. NOTE: Pull the caliper outwards to release the piston.
   Detach the caliper.
   1. Remove the bolt covers.
   1. Remove the bolts.

1. CAUTION: Suspend the caliper to prevent load being placed on the brake hose.
   Support the brake calipers.

1. Lift the outer pad retaining clip over the spring retaining lugs.

1. Remove the outer brake pad.

1. Remove the inner brake pad.

Installation

1. CAUTION: If the caliper piston is retracted into the housing, brake fluid will be displaced from the master cylinder.
   Fully retract the caliper piston.

1. CAUTION: Make sure the brake disc faces are clean before installation.
   Install the inner brake pad.

1. Push the outer retaining clip over the spring retaining lugs.

1. Install the caliper.
   1. Install the bolts.

There are spring clips which keep the pads tight in the caliper. These spring clips are missing, or are broken, or have lost their tension, etc.

Installation
