Question about 1996 Chevrolet Caprice Classic

1994 caprice wont stay running

This is a old police car with the LT1 motor....the car runs for about 5 min and shut off....i get a smell of fuel....the car will not start up for about hour and it is a rough idle at first....I am getting black soot out of both tailpipes...now i did just replace everything on this car, map sensor, wires, plugs, air flow sensor, ing. module, coil, ...the car is threwing no codes, (With OBD 1....they may be some codes that I cannot pick up)....now I did notice yesterday that the Eletric Air Pump (It pumps air into the exhaust man and does something/reused with the fumes... well the negative on the connetor is almost melted, like some kind of short, I believe that the pump burnt out....I guess this may cause the car to run rich and will this cause the car from running???

Hi i dont know if this is going to help u but , i have a 1996 caprice and what happened to mine.there is a fuel pump fuse under the hood if that fuel pump fuse is worn or rusty it will not get contact some times the engine will not start or when it do start it will shut off after a couple of min's

Sounds like the fuel pressure resulator too me !!!

the air pump will not change fuel mixture it is used to reduce emissions by adding air to the exhaust to allow the fuel to finish burning
after you replaced all those sensors did you reset the computer (unhook the battery for about 5 min)?

i would pull the plugs clean them, with the plugs out crank it over to clear the cylinders. reinstall the plugs and start it

Put a lt1 engine in 1994 caprice it skips and wont hardly go up hills and back fires


Hello! are you using the harness for that year LT1? the fuel air mixture is controled by the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor, the Throttle Positioning (TPS) sensor and the Oxygen sensors...When you put your foot in it without O2 sensors there isn't any control over fuel/air mix and ignition advance if the MAP and TPS aren't connected...I'm assuming your using the LT1 ECM...Guru...saailer

I believe your injector seals are dried out and leaking when cold and/or regulator problem. A friend's Vete did this befor e I did o-rings on injectors

Trying to wire a 1994 lt1 into 1996 chevy s-10


It should be a plug and play if your using the ECM for the 1994 engine. The ECM on the 1996 S10 will no work on the LT1 engine, for one thing the S10 ECM will only command for 6 fuel injectors and will have different injection pulse and so on. The program of the S10 ECM is made for the Vortec as to the LT1 will have different parameter **** as engine running temperature, vacuum readings, and timing.
The most obvious would be the 1994 LT1 runs on a OBDI system and the 1996 is running on a OBDII system. You can still run the 1994 LT1 from a 1994 with a OBDii system ecm, but some of the sensors will need to be upgraded to accommodate for the proper readings the OBDII system will need to have the engine to run right.
If you don't have the right ECM for the LT1, go to the wrecker's and locate one, Caprice, Camero, Firebird ECT.....

hei module on the distributor can cause the same problem, but if it is an lt1 the distributor could be going out. The lt1's are known to get coolant inside of them and burn up. Easy way to check the problem is to get a fuel pressure gauge from advance auto parts and check the fuel pressure while your driving, just zip tie the gauge the the wipper arm and watch the gauge while driving. It's easier with a co-pilot.back to the Hei module, this module sends a signal to the computer to control injector pulse and ignition fire. If you take it off( under rotor) and bring it to Advance they can check it.
