Replace coil spring

I broke a coil spring in the rear, just wondering best way to remove these parts and replace. I see there are like 4 bolts that cover the upper part of the shock and coil spring. Is it easier to remove this?

You have to remove them - that "block" is the upper strut-to-body mounting section and serves as the upper seat for the spring as well as the anchor for the top of the strut. You need to take those four 17mm bolts out, as well as the rear upper sway bar bolt, the upper control arm bolt (at the top of the hub), and the bottom bolt on the strut, where it goes through the lower control arm. You'll then have to compress the spring enough to take the bolt out of the "block" (it goes through sideways, and I believe is 19mm on the bolt head as well as the nut). At this point, you can slide the spring/strut out of the block, decompress the spring, pull out the strut, and install a new spring over the strut. Recompress enough to get the top of the strut visible through the anchor bolt hole in the block, rebolt it, decompress the spring, and reinstall the assembly in the car. Usually when you go to reinstall it, the bottom of the strut is not angled quite right once the top four 17mm bolts are back in and the block is secured to the body. I put a large screwdriver through the lower strut bolt hole at the bottom of the strut and use that to turn it, or I grab the weld near the bottom of the strut with large ChanneLock pliers and turn it until it's aligned with the control arm properly. Once it is, put the lower bolt back in, rebolt the control arm and sway bar, and you're good to go.

Note - this job will not affect alignment specs - you don't remove any bolts used in aligning the car, so that's not a concern when doing this repair.

Some autoparts stores lend tools as a courtesy. Things like spring compressors or strut compressors are needed. Some rear struts are made to come off as a unit with the coils made as part of the strut. Others are a 2 piece design and the coil and strut are individually replaced.

A note for the struts is that many need an alignment similar to the common front end alignment after you are done.

Mufflers- these usually come from the factory welded together. You need to allow for the lengths of the pipe and muffler in order to bolt them together after you saw off the old parts. IT HAS BEEN SAID THAT YOU CAN NOT GET A MUFFLER AS CHEAP AS A PROFESSIONAL SHOP CAN. Some are better off re-welded together instead of bolted. You would still have to buy U-bolts but a shop would just weld. Less parts less cost. Also dirt and rusty steel in an eye is not fun.

you will to support the rear lower control arm, remove the through bolt to the spindle, and the bolt at the rear cradle for the control arm, then lower the arm and the spring should come out.

Replacing rear coil springs


You have to remove the struts from the car. Place the struts on a compression tower to relief pressure from spring. Once spring is compressed take of the top bolt on the strut which holds on the strut mount. After strut mount nut is off, loosen the springs tension and replace it with the new coil spring you are planning one using. Tighten the spring with mount back on and tighten bolt. then reinstall on car.

the easiest way to replace the spring is to actually replace the spring and strut assembly together. most parts stores sell what they refer to as a "quick strut assembly". all you would do at that point is unbolt the old strut assembly and bolt the quick strut one on. no need to compress the spring to replace the strut etc. the process would involve removing the wheel, removing 4-5 bolts, removing the old assembly and then bolting the new one on. the complete assembly at autozone should run you about $130-140. good luck with it

Hi Michael,

You need a pair of good coil spring compressors about 10 inches long that are reasonably slimline and robust enough to hold the power of the spring, trolley jack, axle stands, sockets and spanners to fit the nuts and bolts and half a dozen tie wraps, 4 inches of longer.

Jack up and support the rear of the car (if you have access to a wheels free ramp so much the better) remove both rear wheels.
Using the compressors compress the spring until you can squash it down to about 2/3rdsof its length, it will then rotate and move freely, once that is the case you have compressed it enough..
Then, and only then, undo the bottom shocker bolt, the one through the lower swing arm and remove the bolt.
Using a 1/2 inch 13mm socket and whatever extensions and wobble drives you need to achieve it, remove the 4 nuts/ (some have 4 bolts ) from the top shocker plate (directly at the top of the shocker ) releasing it from it's mounting point, once these 4 are out this will allow you to maneuver the whole assembly, spring shocker and top plate, out through the gap between the hub and the wheel arch, most can be got out without removing anything else, but occasionally I have had to remove the brake caliper to make enough room, and only once I had to take out the lower hub bolt (if you have to do this be sure to dot punch 2 marks on the disc around the head of the bolt which has graduations marked on it for rear wheel alignment, and on the hub directly adjacent to the mark you made of the head of the bolt, when reassembling you simply line up the 2 dots and your rear wheel will be back where it was before you took the bolt out.
Once you have the shocker and spring assembly out, slide the shocker out and replace it by removing the top nut through the top plate.
once done, use tie wraps to fasten the top plate to the top of the spring (makes handling it a bit easier, and reverse the removal procedure.
Most important thins when reassembling to remember, DO NOT remove the spring compressors until you have reassembled the top plate back in its mounting and re fitted the bottom shocker bolt.

Why Jaguar decided to adopt this stupid way to fit a rear spring is beyond me ! Probably to stop people from being able to change their own parts !!
The XJ40's were self contained and Much easier to remove as a whole unit !

REMOVE REAR SEAT AND PACKAGE SHELF TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE UPPER SHOCK ATTACHING NUTS.REMOVE UPPER ATTACHING NUTS. RAISE VECHICLE REMOVE REAR WHEEL AND SUPPORT THE LOWER CONTROL ARM WITH A JACK REMOVE LOWER SHOCK ABSORBER MOUNTING BOLT. REMOVE SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY FROM THE VECHICLE. How to change stuts


  • Rent a spring compressor before you start removing the old struts and putting on the new ones. You can rent a spring compressor at any auto store. You can also buy one, but if you are only going to use the compressor once, it's best to simply rent it. Jack up the car and remove the tire. Then place one jack stand on the side you are working on.
  • 2 Loosen the two lower bolts that hold the brake line to the strut you want to remove. Remove the cap covering the top of the strut, and while holding the coil over the strut, remove three nuts. Pull out the cover to the strut assembly.
  • 3 Tighten the spring using the spring compressor and remove the nut at the top of the strut. Decompress the spring, and the strut will be freed from the spring. Remove the front strut.
  • 4 Put in the new strut and bolt it back up. Replace the tire. You now have the old strut removed and the new one in place.
  • 5 Repeat Steps 1 through 4 when removing and replacing the rear strut.

    How do i get a broken pich bolt out of my rear spring so i can replace it, drilling is not working


    1. You can replace the spindle = Expensive
    2. You can use a small drill bit (cobalt) and drill though enough to use an extractor to remove the offending piece.

    Suggestions to help might be to use a little PB Blaster and or heat on the bolt before trying to remove the offending piece before you attempt to remove it with an extractor. Take your time as you will most likely get only one chance to get it out.

    Extractor sets are pretty cheap at Harbor Freight if you have one near you. You can insert the extractor from either side in the bolt hole.
