Question about 1997 Chevrolet Astro

2003 chevy astro awd code P0420 cat system efficiency below thres

This lists bank 1 -how common is this to be found to be oxygen sensor and not convertor. Also I have read blogs saying aftermarket security systems with relay in them cause intermittent stalling problems and throw this code because of stall but we have had this van over a year and no previous problems so i am thinking not likely???

If you had a problem with the converter you would also have more codes than just that one you would have codes for the evap plus the bank 2 codes as well chances are the O2 sensor on the bank one is the propblem so i would replace it and clear the code no problems should exist after that. as far as the security system the only way it would cause a stall is if that power feed comes from the ignition relay to supply that circuit to the cutout of the security system in a continuous loop and then only if the relay itself is found to be weak

P0420 has nothing to do with any other system, it refers to the o2 sensor that is behind the cat and does nothing as far as controlling fuel/air mixture or engine performance, if that's the only code present it means that the catalytic converter is not doing its job, if you live where you have yearly inspections just replace the cat, if you want a cheap way around it, here. Go to radio shack and get a small diode, very cheap, the specific electrical values are not important, now cut your o2 signal wire on the pcm side of the plug most likely purple, solder in the diode with the silver band on the pcm side of the wire. Fixed, this causes a slight voltage drop and stabilizes the signal going back to the pcm so it thinks the cat is working! Takes 5 minutes and 10 cent diode from radio shack! "Off road use only"

Where is the O2sensor bank 1 at with a code of P0420. AND do I need to replace both sensors upstream and down. Or just the one that is showing up on the obd scanner.

Bank one is front side of cat. It should also tell u if it's cat 1 or cat 2. Depending on make an modle an yr. Catalyst 1 bank 2 is left cat back sensor. Catalyst 2 bank 2 is right cat back sensor. U do not have to replace upstream also. My o2 sensor Catalyst 2 bank 2 went bad. Had engine code for burning rich bank 2. Replaced tha down stream sensor an fixed problem runs better an better gas. This was in 97 gmc suburban. Idk what vehicle ur askin about. An I'm not to familiar with much about cars jus trucks an suvs.

P1884 code 2005suzuki forenza P0420 P0134 P0138

code p 420 refers to cat converter system , bank 1--efficiency below threshold ===causes ---cat converter faulty---wiring --heated oxygen sensor (HO2S), 2 faulty
code p 0134 refers to HO2S 1 bank 1-no activity detected ===causes --wiring open circuit -- heating inoperative --- HO2S
also refers to oxygen sensor ( O2S) 1 bank 1--no activity detected == causes wiring ---O2S
code p 0138 refers to HO2S 2 bank 1--high voltage === causes ---wiring short to positive ---HO2S--- ECM
also refers to O2S 2 bank 1 high voltage === wiring short to positive O2S -- ECM
I do not have a listing for code p 1338 but I suspect that it will refer to the other codes in some way
first fix is to check the cat converter is operational ( not cracked and blocking the exhaust system)
next replace the HO2S sensor ( one before the cat converter ) and then the O2 sensor (the one after the cat converter)
all the codes will relate to problems in that area

How do I troubleshoot code P0420 and pass emissions

code p 420 refers to catalytic converter system bank 1--efficiency below threshold ===causes--- catalytic converter,--wiring---HO2S 2 sensor
could be a bad HO2S sensor or a failed cat converter
try the sensor first as they are cheaper than a cat

Po 420 ?

code p0420 refers to cat converter system, bank 1 efficiency below threshold===causes --cat converter--wiring HO2S sensor 2

check that the cat converter is ok and replace the sensor. ( it is a HO2S sensor which will be different to a O2 sensor so get the right one )

It sounds like one of your catalytic converters doesn't appear to be working up to par if you're getting this error code.

How many oxygen sensors are on a 1999 chevy blazer?i found 3 one on each manifold before the cat and one after the cat. but the guys at the local auto parts store said that there are 4 total. am i missing...

if it has 2 cats then it has four sensors. i cat 3 sensors. i dought they all went bad. o2 sensor malfunction will not cause a cat efficiency belw threshold code. i would guess a baf cat on bank one.but if air pump was bad it might be poluted with carbon.try driving it hard for a bit. mabee it will clean up

Po420 code monte carlo ls 2001

PO420 code is for catalyst system efficiency below threshold (bank 1) Usually it means that it is time for a new catalytic converter on bank number 1. Cylinder bank number 1 is always the bank with the number 1 spark plug in it.
