My spedometer stopped working and my OD light as well as Service Engine light came on.

Speed sensor, for the OD it is used for speedometer, depends on year make and model. So lets just say its a SUV or Truck, the speed sensor is at the axle the rear axle here it uses the speed sensor for ODO and double up as a ABS information.the speed sensor or VSS is need to inform the ECM how fast your going and it commence gear change, without this sensor now it takes reading from TPS and MAF, and determines shift the quality wont be there and so wont TCC.

Odometer and Spedometer not working on 2003 Kia Sedona. Also a loud bumping noise when wheels are turned to the right. Are they releated? I just had they tie-rods replaced also.

If the bumping noise started around the same time that the Speedometer started acting up, then I'd say they are related. I'm not sure about the Kia setup, but if the speed sensor is telling the on board computer (ECM) one thing, but the wheels are doing something else, the computer is going to try to make the car compensate for what it sees from the speed sensor...

I had this problem on an Explorer.

With my Explorer, the problem was the worm gear on the inside of the transmission... but other things in that area are the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) and the Drive gear for the speedometer...

The way I isolated the problem was to take out the speedometer gear and hook it to a cordless dril (electric2_bing.gif drills might spin it too fast). Turn the ignition to the "on" position, but do not start the car2_bing.gif. Have someone watch the speedometer from inside the vehicle as you spin it.

If the speedometer gauge works and stays constant, then you know your problem is with the drive gear or the worm gear on the inside of the transmission.

If it doesn't work, then you know that there is an electrical issue with the speed sensor circuit or something in the gauge cluster is broken.

Good luck

Acceleration hesitaiton, speedometer, overdrive light flashing

First off, I have a 1987 Supra non-turbo and I have seen a similar problem on my car. Probably one part of the two part speedo cable has broken, or the speed sensor has failed. The speedo cable turns a speed sensor which is part of the speedo gage cluster. The signal right now from the speed sensor to the computer is probably zero so the PCM thinks the car is stopped. The PCM has a limit on how high the engine will rev while the car is not moving. This is also the "limp home mode" max rpm in case the speed sensor fails. So if you fix your speedo/speed sensor, I think the acceleration problem will go away. The cable is in two parts--a "lower cable" which goes from the tranny to a junction and an "upper cable" which goes from the junction to the speedo. You will need to determine which cable is broken or if the speed sensor itself has a broken part.

To check the cable, find the junction under the car on the passengers side and disconnect it. The cable frequently breaks right at this spot. You will be able to turn the upper speedo cable by hand and have a partner listen/look for results on the speedo cluster. If the cable checks out, you may have to pull the instrument cluster to check what is wrong with the speed sensor.

Secondly, the flashing O/D light is signaling you that there is a trouble code waiting (probably for the transmission which also needs a speed signal). You can obtain trouble codes from the PCM via the diagnostic connector in the engine compartment. The connector is on the driver's side of the compartment just behind the fuse box. It is labeled "diagnostics". Using a paper clip or a hair pin and a jumper wire, connect the terminals "T" and "E1". (there is a guide to the terminals on the inside of the plastic flip cover.) Turn the ignition to on but do not start the car. The check engine light will start flashing two digit codes. (Four flashes followed by two flashes=Code 42= speed sensor signal lost.) There will be a pause then the next code. At the end of the codes, it will start repeating the sequence of codes again until you turn off the ignition. If there are no codes, the check engine light will just flash continously once every second. Don't forget to remove the diagnostic jumper before starting or driving the car.

1997 Geo Metro speedometer and odometer do not work

Let me guess, it goes up to about 30, stays there, and if you go faster (past what would be the halfway point of your speedometer) it starts dropping below 30. It sounds like the type of speedometer that uses two magnetic cores at 90 degrees to each other, and one has gone out.

Troubleshooting and repair should be similar to this:
