It sounds like you have a corrosion issue. I have personally had this problem before years ago, it was caused by moisture forming around the main fuse connection and would kill power to everything although yours sounds more like maybe a relay or EFI fuse. I would suggest starting by cleaning the battery terminals well. Mix up some water and baking soda and pour it onto the terminals to clean them. Next locate your under hood fuse box (since it is likely the problematic fuse will be located outside of the cab you should start with this one) Pull the fuses and relays one by one and use a pencil eraser to clean the terminals. NOTICE:Some vehicles have special fuses which are bolted in place forcing or prying them out will break them CAUTION:Before removing some fuses and relays in the engine compartment you must remove battery power to prevent damage to computer systems. After you have cleaned the fuse connections you should check the engine grounds to make sure they are not damaged or badly corroded, also check alternator, and starter connections.

What is most likely going on here is the fuel pumps pressure check valve is defective, this allows the fuel to drain back into the tank from the lines and filter, and when u start the engine the lines must be pressurized and the air bleed through the injectors before engine will start and run, the result is long crank times and several start attempts before engine catches and holds a steady idle.

To test the pump buy a fuel pressure test gauge, locate the fuel pressure test valve at top of engine on fuel supply rail to injectors (looks like a metal tire valve) hook up the gauge and make sure it doesn't leak at the test port connection, then run the engine and let the pressure stabilize, shut down the engine and let it set, the pressure should not drop more than 3-5 PSI overnight, if it does u need to replace the fuel pump, this problem by the way is fairly common

01 5.9 dodge diesel slow to start in morning. Starts fine rest of day Why

Check standing battery voltage after sitting overnight. Battery may not be in very good shape, after starting, it will develop a surface charge that helps during subsequent starts. A starter that is drawing too much amperage can also cause this. Also make sure glow plugs are good.

Water rushing sound...

The sound you are hearing is air trapped in the heater core/cooling system. Check the coolant level often, this should work it's self out. Good Luck.

Hard but eventual start

Sounds like you may have a leaky injector which is both leaking fuel into one of the cylinders, and bleeding down any fuel rail pressure. Extra fuel makes it hard to start, loss of rail pressure takes a few seconds for fuel pump to build pressure back up.

The check valve on the fuel line at the filter housing may be leaking back not maintaining pressure when the engine is not running.
