Service engine light on- what does this mean?

I have a Nissan Pathfinder 2005- just had an evaluation done on the engine that checked out fine- now all of a sudden, the "service engine" light is coming on. I was told by the dealership, this is the same as the "check engine", but I don't think this is right. What might be wrong?

The "Service Engine" light is different than the "Check Engine" light. The "Service Engine" light comes on when the oil needs to be changed or every 5k miles.

Engine Service Lights

Your vehicle’s computer system has self-testing capability. When the computer senses that there is a problem with one of the components or sensors it stores the correspondent trouble code(s) in its memory and lights up the "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light to tell you that there is a problem and you should have the car diagnosed and repaired. If you can tell me the code I can give you possible causes.

Weired sound in engine arround 2100 rpm, pathfinder 2005

Take a look at Nissan Technical Service Bulletin NTB05-15b. Title = "Rattle Noise From Vias Power Valve Actuator / Intake Manifold Collector" This appears to describe your problem exactly. I have the same problem with my 2005 Xterra and I am going to try the recommended fix myself at home.

the check engine light may come on for several reasons. first in newer models the light is used because the fluid levels might be low. Another reason is that the ecm may have detected a fault in the sensor system because the parameters were exceeded. another reason is it could be that your fuel cap is not on tight enough. at this point it would hard for me to determine what the codes mean due to not having the manual for your vehicle. in the mean time my suggestion would be to have a full diagnostic done on the vehicle at a shop. some of those codes could be active and some might be stored and unless cleared they will remain and the light will stay on. considering your vehicle is running fine =I suspect that there not actually be a problem but the stored codes need to be reset in order for the light to go out... please rate this........thanks
