Question about 2002 Toyota Corolla

1 Answer

My son was listening to the car radio with the engine off for a couple of hours and as a result the car would not start. When you turned the key all you heard was a click, click, click. We tried to jump start it to no avail. Now there is no sound when you try to start the car. Also, when you open the door and put the key in the ignition the hazard lights flash and the interior dash lights also flash on and off for about 30 seconds. I installed a new battery and the same things happen. Did I burn out a fuseable link wire when I tried to jump start it the first time?

First shoot your son. It is not the fuseable link, when a fuseable link blows you get no power at all to anything. I suspect you have a security system that needs to be reset.

My key is stuck in the ignition.

Your car has several different ignition positions. They each offer slightly different functionality.
Off: In this position, the engine is off, and so are your electronic accessories (unless the delay has not expired yet). You can still turn on lights (headlights, interior lights, etc.).
ACC: This is the accessory position. Turn the key to ACC if you want to listen to the radio, play a CD or use other accessories without cranking the engine.
On: In this position, all of the electronics should come on. This is also the position that the key will return to after cranking the engine.
Start: Turn the key to this position to crank the engine. Let go of the key when the engine is running and the key will return to the on position.

I use to own a car that had an ignition that was ACC - OFF - ON - START.

Try turning your ignition one position clockwise and see if the radio turns off and the key comes out.

My battery light came on when car was started and it would stay on. That is one of the problems. The main problem is that my car wont start because it gave a warning light...Security failed.

Hi Lorraine

Sounds like the water may have shorted the vehicle security module out.

I wrote this tip below on how vehicle immobilizers work. When your son in law removed the battery terminals and cleaned them, and then reconnected the battery, was the key in the ignition? It has to be, as the ECM or Antitheft Module, needs the key in close proximity to the lock to pair the chip in the key, to the chip in the ignition lock. You can re-pair the chips, by disconnecting the battery for a couple of hours and then with the key in the ignition in the OFF position, reconnect the battery.

All modern cars have alarms and immobilizers. There is a chip in the key and a chip in the ignition lock. If both are present, the ECM (engine control module) releases power to the ignition circuit. When you turn the key, the starter spins the engine and you get a spark. If any one of those three items are not in the chain, you get the engine to turn, but no spark. There is no way to beat the system.

This is what what your fault code brings up

when unhooking the battery turn key on all the way to run position and leave that way for about two hours and then turn off and remove key and hook up battery and start engine that procedure drains the backup battery in the computer and makes it relearn back to factory settings basicly reboots

Ran out of gas

Put some gas in, a couple gallons should do. Turn the key on.....not the engine. Listen to the quick hum from the fuel pump. Turn key off. Follow this procedure abt 10 times then start up the car.
