Question about 2005 Jeep Wrangler

1 Answer

Hello, I am thinking of buying an 05 Wrangler and have a question about transmission noise. It is a 6 spd manual transmission and when I drove it there is a whining noise, does this in all gears. Almost sounds like most manual transmission auto's when they are in reverse. Is this normal or should I look for another Jeep? I did notice a grinding when shifting up/down into 3rd occasionally even with the clutch to the floor. It only has 28,xxx miles and has the 4.0 motor. Thanks!

The winning noise could be a bad bearing, most likely the one on the input shaft that goes into the clutch because it does it in all gears, and as far as the grinding when you try to upshift or downshift to third sounds like siconizer is bad. Unless the dealer or whoever your thinking of buying it from wants to shoulder some or all of the cost to fix it, or deduct the cost to have it fixed, i would shop around. Even thought its low milage, it must of been 28000 hard mi. for it to be doing that.

What would cause code P1603 to occur on 2005 Jeep Rubicon

I have an 05 6 cylinder automatic TJ. The other morning I was getting trouble codes U0101 and P1603. For a few seconds the Jeep was shaking and for the entire 30min ride it wouldn't shift into the last gear, it would just continue to rev. The next day I drove it and it was fine. I also noticed a slight high pitch whine noise coming from the engine at low speeds. Any suggestions? Thanks!

No hi gears making jumped chain noise/ 90 somethin wrangler 5 spd

If the chain in the transfer case broke, they don't fall off, you would know. It would make the noise all the time. The noise your hearing is most likley from the transmission. If you have the 2.5L engine you have an ax5 transmission, the 4.0L came with an ax15. Both transmissions work basicly the same. Gears 1-2 share a shift fork, so do 3-4. I would guess that you have'nt got to 5th gear. There is most likley a problem with the shift fork or the gear synchronizer. You cant be sure till you open it up. The hardest part about working on transmissions is getting over the fear of working on transmissions. I have been fixing cars for about twelve year now and still get a kick out of good mechanics who are afraid of transmissions. If your a farly handy person, its not that hard to take the top off and look. Buy a shop manual and remove the shift lever and the cover under it. The shift forks will come out with the cover, and the rings that they attach to in the transmission are the synchronizer's. If you get that far you'll figure out whats wrong. Bad synchronizer's mean the tranny's coming out. Hope this helps.
