AWESOME a real camaro problem. backfire. strong odor of gas because the gas isn't getting burned caused from backfire. backfiring because the spark isnt sparking when its supposed to. problems could be bad spark plug wires , bad plugs , bad ignition parts. your gonna need to check wires for bad spots, check ignition coils and stuff like that. if all that stuff is ok, then your problems have to do with inside the engine. jumped time etc.
Do a compression test as a malfunctioning valve can cause back fire through the carbie. Since you have changed all the wires double check you have them in the right order because if they are wrong you could get a backfire.
check the timing and spark, chains and belts like jumping in the cold as everything is stiff and doesn't want to turn,if your timing has jumped or slipped that would cause it. so first check if you have spark when you crank the engine, some cars if you disconnect a plug wire it shuts off the spark, see what method your car has for checking for spark.. start there.
it could also be that either the timing chain jumped because of worn teeth or the gear on the distributer might be worn as well . i would check this first. you can always pull the valve covers to check the rockers to make sure they are not real loose, but chances are you would have noticed that right away. if it were the coil you would not have a strong spark on any of the cylinders and it would probably real hard to start. due to the age of the vehicle it's possible the ecm is on it's last leg, but before i would look at that i would check all the other things first. if it is the ecm you can get a used one at a salvage yard for around 200 bucks . it will cost you a mint at the dealership. hope this helps. please rate this thanks.
