Engine check light read p0171 and p0420, noticed a leak of engine oil on cylinder 2 area of head gasket when checking the sparks plug, is that the cause?
Got a oil leak on the head gasket around the 2nd cylinder area on a 2003 toyota camry. i think its causing the check engine light p0171 and p0420 read. so if i replace the head gasket will that help? and is it easy to do?

P0171 code is described as: lean condition bank 1, oxy sensor 1. If your vehicle is a 4 cylinder, which I believe it is.. you have got a lean air/fuel mixture being found by the ecm(computer).This can be caused by several things. The first of which is a possible vacuum leak at or near the intake manifold. This can also be caused by a MAF(Mass Air Flow) sensor problem or even by something as simple as a clogged fuel filter. This lean condition could also be the cause of the P0420 :described as a catalyst efficiency problem. It would be best to have the vehicle taken to a reputable repair facility that is capable of engine performance diagnostics and have them run tests for these codes. The gasket you mention is most likely a valve cover gasket not the head gasket and would not cause these codes. Although you should have this leak fixed before it becomes a problem.

There's either a big loss of coolant from somewhere such as a hose or cylinder head.
It could also be a faulty cylinder head gasket/cylinder head.
Does the car overheat? Overheating is a symptom of head problems as is loss of power.
Check the coolant level - has it dropped?
Start the engine and see if any air bubbles appear in the coolant. If so, it probably is caused by exhaust gas leaking through the head/head gasket into the cooling system.
Check your engine oil dipstick. If the oil is a greyish/creamy colour that indicates coolant has found its way into the oil system. Cylinder head problem ..
Get somebody to check your car for you. Don't drive it if there's suspected head problems - you'll cause more damage
Assuming it is getting fuel to the cylinder, and the ignition timing is correct.....
1. Check for spark. (could be a bad spark plug). I have seen plugs that will fire outside of the cylinder, but not when installed. check carefully.
2. If there is spark, get a compression tester. remove the spark plug, replace with the tester, crank the engine a few revolutions. record the reading.
3. Remove the tester and squirt some oil into the cylinder, replace tester and crank engine again - record the result.
4. If step one reads zero...you have a burned exhaust valve or a hole in the piston, unless it is a blown head gasket which usually means there is water in the oil or visa versa. Or...if the head gasket is blown between cylinders, (no oil in water or water in the oil), then you need to do step 1 on the cylinder next to the bad cylinder. It should have a low or zero reading also.
5.If step 1 is a low reading (not zero) and step 2 INCREASES the reading. This means the rings for that cylinder are worn out and the engine should be overhauled.
6. If step 2 does not increase the reading of step 1 and it remains low (not zero), this indicates a leaking or partially burned exhaust valve.

Smoke oil? For what your thinking that is oil? Smoke coming from the
tailpipe is not good news, but does not necessarily mean the engine
needs rebuilding. First, you need to determine what color of smoke is
coming from the tailpipe * White smoke is caused by water and or antifreeze entering the cylinder, and the engine trying to burn it with the fuel. The white smoke is steam. There are special gaskets (head gaskets are the primary gaskets) that keep the antifreeze from entering the cylinder area. * Blue smoke is caused by engine oil entering the cylinder area and being burned along with the fuel air mixture. As with the white smoke, just a small drop of oil leaking into the cylinder can produce blue smoke out the tailpipe. * Black smoke is caused by excess fuel that has entered the cylinder area and cannot be burned completely. Another term for excess fuel is "running rich." Poor fuel mileage is also a common complaint when black smoke comes out of the tailpipe. Black smoke out the tailpipe is the least cause for alarm.
If you confirm us that is oil smoke, check and keep in mind that the car has many seals, gaskets, and
O-rings that are designed to keep the engine oil from entering the
cylinder, and one of them has failed. If too much oil leaks into the
cylinder and fouls the spark plug, it will cause a misfire (engine miss)
in that cylinder, and the spark plug will have to be replaced or cleaned
of the oil. Using thicker weight engine oil or an oil additive designed
to reduce oil leaks might help reduce the amount of oil leaking into the
Possible blown head gasket. Remove spark plugs, check engine cylinder compression test. If head gasket is leaking, you will show a low reading in that cylinder. Should be around 150 psi, engines vary. If it is an automatic transmission, the tranny cooler inside the radiator could be leaking into the cooling system.
Typical symptoms of a blown headgasket may include: -bubbles of air coming up into your radiator (remove cap before starting) -leaking radiator -milkshake colored oil -overheating -rough running -coolant or oil running from head -spark plug(s) that have a green tint (if green coolant). -white colored or sweet smelling exhaust, white smoke of your tail pipe, or loosing coolant through your overflow
It could be an intake manifold gasket causeing this...it could also be a head gasket and/or cracked cylinder head. You can pressure test the cooling system to check the intake gasket, and compression test the cylinders for head problems.. If you have had an overheating problem in the past the cylinder heads and gaskets would mostly likely be the problem....Removing the spark plugs will give you an indication on where the water is entering...the plug will be discolored.
