Leaking rack and pinion steering unit in a 2002 infiniti i35. How do you repair and what is the estimated cost?

The only way to repair a leaking rack and pinion is to replace the rack and pinion with either a new or remanufactured unit. (Nobody sells rebuild kits for them like they used to several years ago.)
AutoZone lists a remanufactured unit for $452.99 plus a $115.00 core charge. Click HERE for more information.

If you are having a professional shop do the job, they will most likely charge you the standard labor time multiplied by the shop labor rate + alignment charges. This can vary considerably depending on the area where you live and what shop you take it to. The standard labor time to perform rack and pinion replacement on your vehicle is 5.5 hours. (Does not include alignment)

The labor rate in my area averages about $95 per hour. A wheel alignment can be done for about $70.
The total job would run $1045.99 + taxes and charges for shop supplies, which would put it right in the neighborhood of $1100.00.

My rac and pinion is leaking. do i have to replace the entire thing or just the line that leaks

If it is a hose that is leaking then you can just replace or repair it, but if it is the rack itself it is better to replace the whole assembly. A new assembly will give you warranty . To replace some parts on a leaky rack may just move the leak , as the rack may be worn somewhere else.

Is rack and pinion shaft serviceable to repair leak or does entire unit have to be replaced

If it were years back most shops would have done an overhaul or just replaced the damaged part itself, but today yes the whole rack has to be changed. The problem with just replacing one part is that if one area goes bad then the others are not to far behind. Racks are almost the same price as just doing the work to repair the leak it has. This means that it is just more cost efficient to replace the whole rack itself then just repair one area, so most likely when you go to you'r repair shop you will have to replace the whole rack.

Hope this Helps!

The power steering rack is leaking on the drivers side. Can the seal only be replaced while on the car or does the rack need to be removed to be repaired/replaced?

It is done for and needs replacement. That's a seal leak and rebuilding the existing rack is a nightmare. Far more economical to replace it.

Severe leak in rack and pinion-dumping steering fluid

Have you ruled out a leaking hose or hose connection? If so, to replace a rack system on most cars is an expensive repair. The labor rate can be from 70-125 an hour depending on the shops rate, then this is calculated to the over-all time they say will take to complete the job, usually 2.5 hours possibly a little longer and the rack system is about $185.00 -200.00 dollars.

Power steering fluid leaks, rack replaced approx a year ago

May have a failure in the replaced rack. I would take it back to the shop that did the work for warranty. If you got a remanufactured rack it was re-built and may have had major problems that were not fixed with the rebuild.

If there is a leak on a 98 Toyota Rev4 rack and pinion, does the whole unit need to be replaced, or can we just change the seal?

depends on whats causeing the leak, hose? replace hose, bent or worn shaft ? yes replace unit... you will need to determine the overall condition of the unit and surmise whether or not which is more cost effective total replacement or repair, sometimes the labor involved to repair a unit can be more than the cost of remanufactured or new unit installed... have a qualified suspension and steering technician help you evaluate the circumstance...
