Brakes making a scraping sound

My drum brakes are making a scraping sound. All of my tools are on the other side of the country, so I can't disassemble myself. I am thinking there is either a rock stuck in there or the slack adjuster cable is broken. Any other ideas before I pay a mechanic to tell me what I already know lol?

ya i should have mentioned it only scrapes when the brake is applied and at low speed...I still have braking power but it is slightly diminished.

I took my blazer to a mechanic & ask to have the brake pads changed only. Well, he brings it back to me & it has an awful vibration to it & a rubber like scent to it. I called him back & told him that something was wrong with it. Well, he takes it in a few days & comes back telling me that two calibers were bad & had to be replaced. Well, should he not of noticed that before replacing the brake pads on all four? Well, that same day, I took my son down the road to get a bag of chips & it started to make a weird sound & started to smoke. Well, he took it a couple of days ago & says it was the intake. I have spent so much money out within three days. I just feel like something isn't right with all of that. Upset...

The pads were shot and I guess I couldnt hear the wear indicators until they carved up the rotors...cost me 300 bucks for something I should have notice a LOT sooner...

What I do in situations like that is go buy the cheapest tools (jub specific) you can get...Then keep them as "spares". Most shops where I am get at least $60 per hr (really cheap) you can but a bunch of wrenches for that!!!

XL7 has a clicking scraping noise on drivers side in reverse only. Have checked brakes and they look ok. When I put on jacks with the hub off and turn by hand I can still hear the clicking grinding

Where is the noise? Front or back? At the brake or differential? Usually grinding and clicking is the rear brake drums. Brake shoes/hardware. Year, make, and model?

Rear brakes make a scraping noise they are drums and shoes do they need replacing? been to a garage and they said there ok.

I will assume that your brakes and drums are good, (might want to inspect to make sure the shop just didn't want to do the job) Sounds to me like you might have a bent backing plate or bad wheel bearing.

Its possible they don't like working on drum brakes, if my car made that sound, I would have my brakes replaced without any inspection. Slight chance of a bad wheel bearing, but they usually make a growling sound kinda like the roar of a biplane. Guess its possible your backing plate for the brakes could be bent, rubbing the drum.

I HAVE A 1998 CHEVY CAVALIER. I JUST REPLACED THE BRAKE BOOSTER, MASTER CYLINDER AND ABS BOX AND BACK DRUM BRAKES. WHEN I APPLY THE BRAKE IT GIVES A CLICKING NOISE AND GRABS REAL BAD ON BACK RIGHT SIDE....

manually adjust the rear brakes up to just touching the drums the drums .en turning the drum a very slight scrape would be about right. Adjust both sides evenly. I hope that you assembled the brake shoes correctly

Scraping sound coming from right rear. could this be caused by faulty fuel pump

A scraping sound is more likely to be worn brake pads. The sound is an indication that very soon, there will be metal shoe to disc / drum contact. When this happens, the cost of the brake work can increase substantially. The parking brake makes use of the rear brake disk / drum and can also be the source for this noise.

Have the brakes inspected at once to lower the cost of the work if warranted. The stopping distance will increase slightly if the rear brakes have work out (the vast majority of braking needed to stop a vehicle is performed by the front brakes). The parking brake my not "hold" the vehicle if worn out.

It is also possible that while inspectimng the brakes that the service provider may be able to tell you the problem (if not brakes) during a road test or inspection.

I hope this helps & good luck!

My car makes an explosion sound.. but its performance isnt being affected.. could it be the ******?

The exploding noise need more info.

The grinding when you stop is your brakes, there should be a tab thats suposed to make a squeil sound and the brake worn out has a metal to metal scrape that you should feel isnt right get it replaced asap so its just the brakes and not the rotor or the drum.

Rear Brake on passenger side makes a noise like a high speed rub

Thanks for the inquiry.
This sounds like the either the tattle-tail is giving you a signal the the brakes are worn and need to be replaced before they wear the drum/rotors. Depending on the extent of the sound it may also mean the shoes/pads are worn down far enough you have metal on metal scraping the rotors/drums making this noise when you apply the brake. In either case it's time to re-build your rear brakes.
Kind regards,
TF

When i hit the brakes i hear a lot of noise and the passenger side rear wheel moves

YOU BETTER GET TO A BRAKE SHOP AND FAST, SOUNDS LIKE YOUR REAR BEARINGS OR TIE RODS ARE GONE AND YOUR PADS ARE WORN DONE SO BADLY THERE IS METAL TO METAL CONTACT. YOU BACK WHEEL COULD FALL OFF. VERY, VERY DANGEROUS.

I replaced the brake pads on a '94 Chrysler town and country, I had the rotors turned also, I did not use any anti-vibration substance on the shoes. I hear a clicking noise from front brakes.

Back wheels making a scraping sound

Check the brakes, sounds like they may be metal to metal, or something in the brake system has fell off into the drum like a spring or retainer.
