Could be the rear transmission mount, engine mount or half shaft universal joint.

Sounds like your transmission. It could be your u joints in your drive shaft. However, if its coming from the front , it is probably your transmission going bad. Check your front end out also.

The possibilities are depending on whether you hear the sound in the front or back of the car: You have a broken brake pad in the front or a broken brake shoe in the back; there is a bad wheel bearing that needs to be replaced, there is a flat spot on one of your tires.

1998 pontiac GP makes thuunk when put in reverse

It is the rear motor mount. If there is a load on the motor it will make the noise and if there isnt any loud on it it wont make it. They should put a new one on it and maybe they could sell the car faster. There is three motor mounts on this car , one on the frount of the motor and one near the fan and another on the trans in back of the motor.

I have a Kia Rio 2007 sedan and lately when I start the car and shift into reverse or drive the car shifts with a thunk. When the car is warmed up after driving and stopping this doesn't happen anymore....

Idle RPM is usually higher when the engine is cold. It could be a couple of things as obviously I can't listen to it.
I would check the motor and transmission mounts to make sure one has not failed and also the craddle mounts at the body.
The other possibility could be drive train slack. When you put the car in gear, all of the chain and gear tolerences begine to move forward and have to take out all the slack in the powertrain. As all of that is taken up, you here the "thunk", so it may be normal.
With the hood open, have someone put the car in gear (don't stand in front of it) and watch the engine, if it appears to "roll" or shift in the engine compartment, have the mounts checked.
Let me know.
Regards,

We have a 1998 ford expedition V8 4WD, 131K miles.Problem = when backing out of garage and going down drive (we have an incline and must turn wheel to the left) the rear end of the car makes a thunking...

this can be caused by excessive play in the drive axle button ends inside the differential, you can confirm this by putting the truck on a lift and pulling and pushing in and out on the tires, if there is more than a little movement the axles are worn out at the retainer "C" clips inside the diff.

Sounds like you already know what is wrong with it. It most likely needs a motor, or a rebuild.

2006 Chevy Trailblazer loud thunk noise at start up

My first guess would be the front u-joint on the drive shaft. Try twisting the u-joint to see if there is any play, which there shouldn't be. If the u-joint is OK, have the transmission checked out at a reputable shop. There could be a problem with the torque converter, the valve body, or the bands. You didn't say whether this was a 4 wheel drive or not, but I doubt that the problem is with the transfer case. Let me know what you find.
