1991 Buick Park Avenue and no brakes!

I have a 1991 Buick Park Avenue and the brakes are unreliable. Sometimes they work, then all of a sudden there will be NOTHING. We've changed the brakes, no air in the lines, etc. What else could it be? Why would you have brakes sometimes, and not others?

When the brakes are working they are right there, you don't have to push the pedal too far. It will work fine for awhile, like 100 times, then without warning the 101 time there will be nothing, and you can push it all the way to the floor without anything. Someone else has mentioned the master cylinder might be going bad?? Is that pretty good advice, or are there other possibilities?

I had the same problem , finally was told the anti lock brake system was the problem. Had the anti lock system changed, I cannot think of the name now, but it is supposed to equalize the pressure for the anti lock brakes. Very expensive for a new one. I found one at the junk yard and had a mechanic put it on .

Probably the anti lock brake assembly needs repaired or replaced.this is high dollar fix

this sounds like your master cylinder has gone out, Located on the fire wall on the drivers side of the car ,, if your fluid level is good, and you detect no fluid leaks at the wheel cylinders, this is the most likely problem

My 1991 park ave wheels get hot and it like shakes

when you put on the brakes it should put some of the braking on your back tires also is why your front tires is doing all the work in braking and wearing your front brakes out faster.

My abs light comes on after driving for a few minutes and stays on. After that if I pump the brakes it sometimes slips and stalls and studders (like it would if I were to suddenly hit the brakes hard)....

that could be right, it could also be the sensor. something like your brakes i would listen to the dealer and have replaced. however, i know that on bmw's they have a tendancy to come on for what seems to be no reason and they havent figured it out yet. play it safe, have it replaced at the dealer.

I'm not sure if the rear drum brakes on my 1991 Buick Park Avenue were assembled right and I have leakage.

The leakage usually comes from a defective brake cylinder, or a poorly sealed brake line (there is a copper gasket that needs to be replaced when the unit is serviced. If the old gasket is used, it will leak.
