Fuel pump problem

I had my fuel pump replaced about 2 years ago. From the day I got it back it wouldnt start on the first crank but always on the second. That seemed unusual. Over the course of the last 2 months it took longer to start in the morning, now I have to crank it till the battery dies,I put the charger on it ,let it go and then it takes about 6 or 7 cranks and it starts. After it starts its not a problem starting as long as its not off for too long. If it sitst for more than 4 or 5 hours it won't start. Any ideas? By the way its a 2001 chevy 2500 cargo van. Thank You Jim LiPuma

It seems that your system is not maintaining it's prime and my guess is that your fuel pump realy is weak. what this means is that when you turn the ignition key you should hear the relay click which then primes the system and starts the vehicle. also if your vent tube on your fuel tank is plugged you get in eccsence a vapor lock. i would start by looking at these first if you need further help just click on my user tab on the site

you should be able to purchase that vent tube at a local auto parts store, while your there also get a new fuel filter as well that will also help performance. please rate the solution it would be greatly appreciated thank you Ron M

I would look with fine tooth comb at your fuel line for small pinhole or loose conection

Make sure the fuel filter wasn't installed backwards...if it is correct..then replace the fuel pump..just because it works, doesn't mean it's strong enough to deliver fuel..best of luck

When you turn the key front. Listen for the fuel pump to prime. It should sound like a low humming noise that lasts about 3 seconds. If it does then check for spark by pulling one of our sparkplug wires and putting an extra spark plug in it. Place the end of the wire down somewhere safe and crank the motor. If you can't seek spark in the plug, it is most likely your coil failing. So, check fuel pump and fuel pump relays first, then spark. Good Luck.

Without being there, I can't give you much to go on but one thought...If the tank was low and there was some condensation in there it may have frozen and is preventing the pump from running. You need to do some testing though as at this point, just about anything at all can be giving you a problem. Will it start if you spray carb cleaner into throttle body while cranking? at least that will give you an idea as to whether you are dealing with a no fuel or no spark problem. Also...the pump is kept cool by the fuel in the tank. if run low for a long time or over and over, it can shorten pump life.(but you need to test it before replacement)
good luck

Vehicle died 2 months ago at a stop light, wouldnt restart. fuel pump has been humming for years- so replaced pump &filter-still wont start

Electronic fuel pumps hum. That's pretty normal. It's always a good idea to periodically replace the filter.
First, check your battery cables. Are they frayed? Are they corroded? Are they loose - both where they connect to the battery and where they connect to the block (negative cable) and starter (positive cable)?

If the battery cables check out, have your ignition system and charging system (which includes your alternator and belts) tested by a mechanic.

If these check out, have your vacuum system tested for backpressure or low pressure.

test replace the fuel pump relay, make sure the relay socket has 12 volts to 2 of it's terminal when the key is held in crank position, if not you may have a defective ignition switch or Powertrain control module (PCM)

this year model is notorious for fuel related probs...check the remainder of the fuel system, injectors, and the fuel pressure regulator also verify that the fuel pump is actually running and getting the correct amount of power to the pump itself..... it may not be bad just not getting enough power

this is a very common problem. GM has issued a service bulletin to replace the wiring connector at the fuel pump assembly on top of the tank. check the end of the plug for burnt terminals. the service bulletin states that these corroded connectors cause a voltage drop that results in repeated pump failures.

Doesn't want to start at first

Before you crank try and cut key on for 5-10 seconds then off and back on then crank if cranks up then you have a fuel problem. this will allow pump to run and pump fuel up. could be a bad check valve in pump causing fuel to drain back
