89 jeep yj wont keep running

When I put gas down my carb it will start and I am able to keep it running with giving it gas through the pedal. But when I take my foot off the pedal and dont give it anymore gas it wont idle.

It aslo wont start if I dont put gas down the carb. The fuel is getting to the fuel filter and to the carb from the tank but dont keep running.

Looking for help,
Thanks

I will try that and see I know when i popped off the line after the fuel filter there was alot of pressure there. I did buy some carb cleaner so im thinking of taking off the carb and cleaning it all out . Also the plugs are fouled too so might change those out.

    Thanks for the help

Check filter and take apart carb and clean out all idle circuits and bowl. If you have an idle control solenoid on the back of the carb, clean that out as well.

One other item...Look down into the carb and see if it squirts fuel inside when you work the throttle. If not, the accelerator pump in the carb isn't working. Or, carb float sank.

You may have some debris in the carb bowl. But,I would first check the filter as well as the fuel pump pressure, also make sure that there are no holes in the fuel line going back to the tank.Fuel pump pressure should be around 5psi, delivery should be at least two pints per minute.

If it's not injected, the idle circuit in the carb either isn't adjusted properly or is plugged, or the float level is too low. A vacuum leak can also do that.

thrust bearings are bad and the flywheel is moving out of range of the crankshaft sensor, or the crankshaft sensor is sitting too close to the flywheel.

I cant put on gear when I start the engine.

Check the clutch master cylinder, the line to the slave cylinder on the bellhousing and the slave for leaks. If fluid is low there is a leak. Master can "bypass" as well similar to a brake master in which case it wont leak but the slave won't move when the clutch is applied. If that system is working then the clutch likely has worn out.

My 89 Jeep YJ manual will not go in to reverse while running

Problem is likely either a worn shift fork or bad synchro (both inside the transmission) It's unlikely that you have a clutch problem otherwise the problem would be with first and reverse and shifting other gears would also be difficult.
