connected wires on back of radio to speaker wires and the wires in the doors to the speakers. Factory wiring does not work. If I wire the radio straight into the speaker it works.

I have the same problem, did you resolve the problem?

If factory wiring is bad, just run new wires (from your second post, it appears that is what you did). So, then what's your problem?

Yes. What did you connect speakers to?

Chances are the problem is an amplifier or the radio itself.
Usually you would use a meter to see if you have power to the speakers and to do that you would need a shop manual to get the wiring diagrams.

97 jeep grand cherokee no sound from radio tested radio out of car it works. old owner had amp under back seat and cut into speaker wires in harness reconnected but still on sound

You will need to trace the speaker wires to see if they are disconnected anywhere in the harness. are you sure the speakers are OK? Fopr wire locations on the radio try going to: They list the pin locations and wore coding you will need.
Good luck

Did it fail while you had vehicle, or like this when you bought it? Could be bad radio or wiring harness was chopped up when previous owners had an aftermarket radio installed. They probably just slapped the OEM radio back in when selling car. And didn't put all the OEM wiring back in.

Radio won't play sound

chqances are you either have a loose connection under the dash, or if the signal through the amp itself is the fault. the remedy is to remove the deck and look for a bad conection between the two. to isolate the the bad circuit take the speaker wires and bypass the amp. if you get sound you will know that the amp is the problem. if you don't then the deck it'self is.
