My 1998 Ford Escort won't move out of park sometimes. I have had the brake switch replaced several times. It will work for about 2-4 weeks and then I have the same problem. Please help!

I just had the same thing happen to me for the first time yesterday, and am still searching for an answer. Your brake switch replacement has given me something to start with, but I have also heard that there is a solenoid probably located in the console that may be the problem too.

ther is a solenoid connected to brake pedal at top of pedal replace and that will fix problem. also on consol by shifter ther is a little hole cover remove this and use a straw or screw drive and push down and that will let you shift the tran. until you get solenoid fixed

its your solenoid that is at the top of the brake pedal. when this goes out it won't release shifter. to bypass this there is aplug on console by the shifter on right side pull plug put a screwdriver or evev a straw and push down you can fill the lever go down this will let you shift till you replace solenoid.

This problem sounds like you dislodged the switch on the brake pedal lever. You need the signal to unlock the vehicle from Park. You will probably find that the Brake lights do not work when you press the brake pedal.

Now if the switch is good, you probably broke the fuse feeding power to the switch. You can get a wiring diagram online by running a Websearch or going to Autozone.com and registering your car. This site has a HELP section at the bottom of the page and you would need to toggle between free and pay info.

Changed brake light switch but brake lights remain on in 1998 ford escort

Hi Demetris, I'm glad to help!

Sometimes but not always, the piece on the brake pedal that touches the brake light switch to turn off the light will get bent away from the switch so its not touching it. Check to see if it is touching the switch, pull the pedal toward you and see if the lights go out. If they do go out then 2 things may have happened. (1) The metal bracket is bent and not touching, which you can bend back into place. (2) Some vehicles have what you call a return spring that connects to the dash and runs to the pedal to pull it back toward you to turn off the lights. If you see a spring dangling under the dash, then you'll need to replace that spring. Hope this helps and have an awesome day Demetris.

1995 Ford Escort Wagon Automatic, Won't shift

Hi there,

Most modern automatic cars require the driver to depress the brake pedal first, to allow releasing the gear out of Park.

Some automatic transmissions also provide an 'overide' switch near the gear lever, to allow manual release of the gear lever.

If neither of the above resolve this, then you will need to check the operation of your brake switch, mounted on the brake pedal.

My car won't shift out of park because my brake lights aren't working properly. Sometimes they work and sometimes they won't.

Sounds like your break switch is out. It is on the pedal. Check the hardness that is hooked up to it and you will fund your problem.

2001 ford escort stuck in park lever won't move starts normally

If it wont move into gear, the safety switch is malfunctioning. You can take the plug out of the hole on the upper right side of the console just to the right of the gear shift lever. put a philips screwdriver in the hole and press down. this will manually release the gear shifter mechanism.

Automatic ford escort 1998 will not shift out of "park"

There is a switch between the brake and the transmission. I forget what its called but unless you have your brake pedal pressed your car will not shift out of park. If you do have your brake pedal pressed there may be something wrong with the sensor.
