Can not shift out of park

Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Description
The brake transmission shift interlock (BTSI) system prevents the automatic transmission from being shifted out of PARK unless the brake pedal is depressed. When the brake pedal is depressed, the BTSI solenoid releases a lock pawl. This enables the shift linkage to move and the shift lever to operate.
When service operations are required, the BTSI system can be overridden.
On vehicles equipped with a column-mounted shift lever, override the BTSI system by performing the following steps:

1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
2. Remove battery voltage from the solenoid.
3. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

For vehicles equipped with floor-mounted shift levers, an override lever is mounted on the right side of the assembly. The override lever can be accessed by removing the shift lever boot. Push the lever to the left in order to override the BTSI.

The brake transmission shift interlock (BTSI) system prevents the automatic transmission from being shifted out of the PARK position unless the following conditions are present:

When the ignition switch is in the RUN or the START position, the current flows from the B/U Lamp fuse located in the underhood bussed electrical center (UBEC) through CKT 839 (PNK) to the park/neutral position switch. The park/neutral position switch also feeds the backup lamps portion of the switch. With the transmission in the PARK position, the current flows to the BTSI fuse located in the underhood bussed electrical center (UBEC) through CKT 275 (LT GRN). The current then flows to the TCC/stoplamp switch through CKT 584 (LT GRN/BLK). The current continues to the BTSI solenoid through CKT 1135 (DK GRN/WHT). The ground path is provided through CKT 1850 (BLK) to G207. When the brake pedal is depressed, the normally closed contacts in the TCC/stoplamp switch open and the current flow is interrupted. When the current flow is interrupted, the BTSI solenoid de-energizes. The transmission may then shift to another gear. When the transmission shifts to another gear (except PARK), the contacts in the park/neutral position switch open. This condition stops the current flow to energize the solenoid when the brake pedal releases.

got A/T? or M/T both auto and stick shift have lockout.

this feature (pain) has many failure points.
any cable that jams, there are 2 , one to tranny or ignition
switch. and the brake solenoid unlocker in shift handle.
and the button, to unluck shifter, brake switch (no brake lights/)
to diagnosis it is easy , dismantle the console at shifter
then disconnect cables to find if one is stuck, (easy huh?)
and defeat the solenoid, by hand or 12v applied. and check the button
that it does in fact release.
NOT PARK LOCKOUT: (for if not on flat ground?)
reason 2 , driver, parked on a hill with tire to curb and did so
not setting brakes first (or bad ebrake ) and now the tranny parking
pawl is jammed , opps. so wiggle the steering and wiggle shifter,
or have some one push car forward (parked up hill on right) to release
parking pawl. (or gorilla it, ask bubba to muscle it out of park.)
if down hill , well, you get the idea..... pain.. gotta love A/Ts not.

The manual override may be used in the event that the shift lever should fail to move from PARK with the ignition switch in the ON position and the brake pedal pressed. To operate the shift lock manual override, perform the following steps: 1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position without starting the engine. 2. Firmly set the parking brake. 3. Using a flat-bladed screwdriver, carefully remove the shift lock manual override cover, which is located on the PRNDL bezel. 4. Press and maintain firm pressure on the brake pedal. 5. NOTE: The brake shift interlock actuator is not serviced individually. If replacement is required, install a new floor shift selector lever assembly.

Brake Shift Interlock Actuator - Column Shift Removal and Installation

1. Set the parking brake.

1. Remove the steering column shrouds.

1. Turn the ignition to the accessory position and apply the brake or actuate the brake shift interlock actuator (BSIA) override.

1. Put the selector lever into the NEUTRAL position.

1. Disconnect the BSIA electrical connector.

1. Remove the BSIA screw.

1. Gently pry the clip up and remove the BSIA.

1. NOTE: During installation, verify that the BSIA override has been activated and the slider is fully rearward. Before rotating the selector lever from NEUTRAL into PARK, align the selector lever tab into the BSIA. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

There is a shift lock override switch near the shifter, located under a small hole in the housing (possibly covered by a small plastic cap). Insert a punch in hole to depress switch, shift out of park while switch is depressed.

You need to find the shift lock override. There is usually a small plastic cover or hole somewhere near the shifter. Remove the cover and insert a thin screwdriver into the hole, depressing the lock override, while shifting it out of park. If this works then the soleniod at the shifter or the switch at the brake pedal is bad. Yes the vehicle will start in Nuetral.

There is a brake switch located underneath the drivers side on the back of the brake pedal if this is failing you will not be able to shift from park without the shift override.

no override button. if all the fuses are good, then if i remember there is a switch by the shift lever that when you step on the brake it enables you to move the shifter.good luck

I had this happen to me recently. On my car it was the Park/Neutral Switch. My shift button would not push in because the switch didn't recognize the brake was being depressed. The switch is the problem, on my car a very expensive fix. The work around is an override button usually found near the gear shift lever, you may need to remove a cap to access it. Once you have access just take a flat head screwdriver, stick it in the access hole and press the override switch, while the switch is pressed move your shifter out of Park. From this point on the car will shift normally until in Park again. I plan to get mine fixed in the spring; until then getting out of Park is a two hand job.

Your problem is at your key. The switch in the steering colmb is cracked or worn out. When it happens, try rotating the key counter clockwise just a little bit and watch everything start to work.
