This could be a couple things yes EGR would be one the other is dirty fuel filters remove the EGR and vacuum out the location(do not use a spray cleaner), have a o-ring to replace when you pull it out, clean off the EGR, usually coked up. or if you prefer get a new one as sometimes they get locked up. and change the fuel filters.

Hi there.
well when you throttle up to about 2000rpm do you get blue smoke coming out the exhaust. When driving on flat road will it power up as normal with out missing or getting hot.
what colour was the old spark plugs were they black or light brown.
When you start engine and run for 3 minutes then let it idle and remove oil filler cap do you get smoke coming out.
Number 1 if yes then engine is lacking power due to piston rings worn answer rebuild engine.
Number2 spark plugs brown [good] if black soot as num1.
Number 3 if you get black smoke or blue ,then the engine is lacking compression could be your problem as num1

2003 6.0 misses and blowes black smoke when pulling a load. Mostly at 2000 rpm. Will clear and run ok when floor boarded.

The black smoke would suggest excess fuel. Has the truck been re-chipped? If it has, I would bring it back to stock since the 6L Powerstroke wont take kindly to such an upgrade without some heavy modifications. If it is stock, your problem could be in the ICM. You will need to take it to a dealer for the diagnosis because a reular automotive scanner wont be able to do it and the scanners specifically designed for diagnosing Powerstrokes are prohibitively expensive.

Lack of power, exhaust smoke and engine miss firing, EGR Valve has been removed and cleaned, new EGR Valve was fitted, made no difference, old EGR Valve refitted, car runs with no exhaust smoke and no miss...

Just an idea but the Ford Mondeo ( european car ) from which I believe your engine
is taken has a habit of splitting a low pressure tube at the back
of the engine this is a relatively
cheap, easy fix. The other symptom this used to throw up was a
little more black smoke from the exhaust and a pacing/ surging from
the engine.

White smoke

these engines are pron to injector failure !!! white smoke means dumping fuel ! black smoke means lack of air ! blue means burning oil! its not an easy task! by all means not cheap! ull need 7 injectors and one #8 injector call a ford dealer to see the price ! but i would also call an international aka navistar dealer! there sometimes cheaper

Lack of power misses at road speed smokes on occation dealer said injectors were missing randomly no engine light no power when cold hardly pull it's self when cold 04 powerstroke 6.0

sounds like a good fuel system clean is needed! also make sure there is a clean air filter, as they kill alot of power and will end up causing more fuel to **** through and partially burn giving smoke!

assume diesel engine ? so if water was in fuel ? the engine would not run even b4 it got to engine because fuel filter would rstrict diesel due to water on filter element ? can i just say that from your symptoms ? black smoke/engine runs but poor ? the fact it is black smoke? is most due to lack of air flow to manifold remove air filter element and see if smoke clears? if element of filter has got wet ie floods? it will not allow air through? make sure there is no other restriction/s on filter inlet and outlet pipe to manifold espcially check now for any weakness on pipe to engine from filter ie when you rev up look to see if hose is sucking together due to vacuum created by revs of engine? if injectors were defect ? the smoke would be blue due to over fuel injection ie injectors not atomizing correctly ? i would suspect problem is lack of air? out of curiosity?? how did water enter fuel tank ?? if any more info you can provide it may give better idea of problem ?
