It depends on who you talk to when it comes to how to safely disconnect a battery. I work on industrial trucks, and we were taught to always disconnect the ground cable first, this prevents the possibility of shorting the positive side of the battery to the frame.
In your case I would say not to worry about the starter, and replace the ground strap as it is, if you wish to be safe then cover the positive post with something to prevent you wrench from making contact with both battery posts.

I hope this is of some help.

On a Honda Civic it would be. Use which ever system you are most comfortable with.

    Happy Wrenching.

STARTER WON'T STOP

If its a new starter check and see that the wires are hooked up right, could be time for a new starter, or starter relay on the fender well, or the ignition switch is bad.

91 chevy cavalier has a dead short. Pulled all fuses, still shorting out. Was told to try disconnecting starter. Cannot find starter cable. Where is cable connection?

the positive cable from the battery goes direct to the starter, then there is a smaller wire that goes to the ignition circuit, remove the neg cable and bridge with a test light, that way you can go to every circuit without blowing fuses, also the alt is often not fused to the battery, have patience you will fin it

Replacing old stater in 1996 dodge caravan

For the starter, you just disconnect neg battery cable. Mark starter/solenoid wires, then remove them, then pull out the two starter bolts and drop starter.

Replace starter

Hello NorcalViking, I see u don't waste any time, only 2 words, replace starter. Here's the procedure:
Disconnect neg. battery cable 1st, then positive, disconnect large wire @starter, label and disconnect wires to the starter solenoid, some Hondas have a clip on the starter that secures a wiring harness, if yours does, disconnect the harness at the clip, remove 2 bolts that secure starter in place. Reverse to install. Let me know how it goes, and if u need more info man of few words.
