Ignition switch quit working

I put a radio in and it hit the side of dash mount. it sparked ,killed the engine and key switch

If you kill primary voltage to the ignition coil, the vehicle shouldn't run. Primary voltage to the coil is the positive side of coil. It's a pink wire comes from ignition switch to ignition coil. There are many ways to do something like this. You can kill spark, you can kill fuel, whatever.

I have a 2003 predator 500 when I turn key hit the button it has spark for the first two revolutions of the engine and then it quit sparking what could cause that

1993 taurus when I start the car and as long as i holded the key the car will stay started but if I let go it goes dead


Hello, It sounds like the Ignition switch is bad or the adjustment for the Ignition switch is out of alignment. Some of the Ignition switches will have a rod in the steering column to reach switches under the dash. Check under the dash at the switches mounted around the Brake pedal lever. The switch at that point is an Interlock switch which senses that a foot is on the Brake before it allows you to shift out of Park. And it keeps supplying power when the engine is running.

It is quite common for feet to hit the Interlock switch and knock it out of alignment. When this happens it can cause several problems including yours. If the Interlock switch is still in position and not cracked or broken, then the Ignition switch is bad or out of adjustment.

This boils down to 1 rod or cable in the column with an adjustable switch on each end. The Interlock switch below the dash and the Ignition switch. To take off or adjust the Ignition switch you should remove the plastic column cover, disconnect the Battery and turn the Ignition switch to RUN or ACC. position. Then insert your key and press a drillbit under the spring release in the steering column just below the switch. Pull up with your key and the lock cylinder should come out of the Ignition switch.

There will be an Electric connector to remove and an adjustment screw on the side of the Ignition switch. You can see if the screw worked its way loose, reconnect the Battery and adjust the rod or cable. For all the work you may as well put in a new switch at this point. Adjust everything to function, then disconnect the Battery and reassemble the parts.

THE TROUBLE IS YOUR IGNITION SWITCH. THIS IS NOT THE IGNITION KEY & LOCK CYLINDER. THEY WORK TOGETHER, BUT THE ELECTRICAL IGNITION SWITCH IS ON THE STEERING COLUMN UNDER THE DASH. YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE LOWER DASH PANEL & LOWER THE STEERING COLUMN. TO GET TO THE IGNITION SWITCH. GET A NEW IGNITION SWITCH,TO SEE WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE. THE DIMMER SWITCH FOR THE HEADLIGHTS. IS MOUNTED PIGGY/BACK ON THE IGNITION SWITCH. IF YOU HAVE NEVER DONE THIS IT'S PRETTY TRICKY. THE ROD GOING IN THE DIMMER SWITCH WILL HAVE TO BE SECURED. IF IT FALLS OUT, THE STEERING WHEEL & A LOT OF OTHER NIGHTMARE STUFF WILL HAVE TO BE REMOVED, TO PUT THE ROD BACK IN PLACE. BOTH SWITCHES ARE ADJUSTABLE SO EVERYTHING WILL WORK RIGHT.

Make sure you have a SOLID ground coming from the engine to the fire wall. To test this , get a pretty strong wire with alligator clips on both ends. Connect one to a clean metal part of the engine prefer the block somewhere and the other end directly to the battery. And check your connection with test light for continuity. by putting a test lite to the block and the other side to positive . The light should light if it does? you have a good ground now. try turning the engine over now. If it still doesn't work? Leave the alligator clip wire where you have it. Now get another wire with alligator clips one to the positive side of the starter and the other end tap it on the positive side of the battery. This will test the starter . If it turns over? Good, leave the ground wire you made. And remove the positive one. make a heavy ground from the engine to the firewall. If this still doesn't work ? Time to check the plug under the dash going to the steering column. Sometimes resetting these by removing it and using a tuner electrcal cleaner and putting the plug back will fix it. Now Do you have an alarm? Or a kill switch hidden somewhere? Some times these things fail. Keep that in mind. I had the same problem and found it was a hidden kill switch i must have hit with my foot on the way out of the vehicle. lol Please go with the easier less expensive less hared to do things first. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't want to dance around for 2 hours under a dash board just to find out it was a bad ground outside under the hood . Also check the connections to the starter (big heavy wires) and make sure they are tight.

It's possible that your key is bad or no longer works. A way to verify that it is a key problem is to see if the 2nd key or spare key works properly. Check the side of the remote key for a 3 digit #. if the key variant is less then 221 the way to reset it is to put it in the ignition and pull it out 5x with 8secs. If higher than 221 then the no need to try and reset remote key.

I guess you tried reversing the kill switch. But did you try it after you put the ignition on? Some switches work this way. Try different things. ignition on, ignition off, etc

My 2004 v6 ford explorer won't start new batery and new starter no luck wont even click ?


Did you check the start relay for voltage? Ohms reading?

If I remember correctly the circuit goes like this:
Key turns ignition switch which puts voltage to the start relay which engages the solenoid.
So if it isn't even clicking and your headlights seem to be working fine then it is either the ignition switch or the start solenoid coil.
On older Fords the start solenoid used to be remote mounted on a fender. I heard newer Ford vehicles had it integrated with the starter like GM does.
A quick visual inspection will tell you which and where you need to look.
You might check if there is a fuse for that as well.

Ooh, not turning over? STOP SPENDING SO MUCH MONEY.

There's a problem if you have the 2.2L motor like I do, where the Ground cable just doesn't cut it after a while cause they mounted it too low on the engine block. This kills batteries, starters, and alternators. I now have all new ones, lol. You must have a strong ground or these three parts all start to break down at once. If the ground is deteriorated it could not be giving enough flow to allow the starter to turn over, and it's a cheap fix that will save you from getting a new starter in a year. Grab a $10 cable and mount it on the next bolt up, you'll see what I mean when you look at it.

99 times out of 100 you don't need a new ignition if the lights and radio still come on when you turn the key. It's something else. Check the starter relay in the fuse box in the engine compartment. replace it with a different one of the same kind (such as abs or coolant fan) and try again.

Next, call the dealership to see if the PCM recall has been done. Trust me, this kills MOST OF THESE CARS. Even if they say it has been done, visually inspect the PCM for corrosion. Passenger side, remove the black plastic wheel well in front of the tire, and the computer is right there, connectors facing down. Grab the two bolts holding it in and slide it down to take a look at it. You can get to the top bolt by removing the passenger side headlight. Stupid place to put it if you hit most puddles on the right side of your car like everyone does. There was a recall on these where water would get into the PCM causing everything from the car not working at all, not starting, turning over but not starting, and just about every other condition related to the ignition. It can also send weird messages to the spark plugs, fuel injectors, and have other parts doing weird things. It's actually EXTREMELY common and kills a lot of these cars but it's a simple fix.
