  • Raise and suport the front of the vehicle
  • Under the car, use a socket set to remove the belt splash guard from the passenger side.
  • Find the belt tensioner. It's a small pulley (8) below the alternator (1) on a spring loaded pivot.
  • With the palm of your hand, push firmly upward on the tensioner pulley. If that does not work, get on the 15mm nut in the center of the pulley with a wrench for leverage. Acting like you're "tightening" this nut will provide the correct direction of movement to release belt tension.
  • The belt will loosen. While still pushing on the tensioner pulley, unloop the belt from the crank pulley (6) and/or A/C pulley (5). They're the two lower-most pullies.
  • Remove pressure from tensioner pulley
  • From above the engine or below, remove the belt.
  • Re-route new belt as shown in diagram below. Leave only the lower 2 pullies (A/C and crank) out of the loop.
  • Press the tensioner upwards again
  • While holding the tensioner, re-loop the new belt over the A/C and Crank pullies.
  • Remove pressure from tensioner pulley

  • Good luck and hope this helps.

NO NO, DO NOT LOOSEN THE BOLT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PULLY. Just use it as a Leverage to move the tensioner pully, You should be able to push up on the tensioner by hand if your strong enough, which i believe you are. Once the tension is off the belt, unloop it from the crank or ac pully. There should be a belt routing picture on your radiator shroud or hood, regadless in your engine compartment. When trying to place the new belt, leave the same A/C and crank pullies last. Puch the tensioner pully up again to create some slack then loop the A/C and crank pully and your done.

Just to be on the same note, when your putting the new belt on the belt should be looped on the tensioner pully before you lopp the A/C and crank. Good Luck friend

Adjust Airconditioner belt tension on 2001 GMC Yukon

Some of these didnt have a tensioner, if yours does it will be spring loaded at all times, but some have no tensioner and the belt has to be rolled onto the pulleys by turning the engine over by hand.. If this is your style the belt is. One time install deal if you take it off you need to replace it!!
