Question about 1997 Nissan Maxima

1 Answer

The car just stopped one day. The lights on the inside will not come on, no radio, and no head lights. I put in a new battery and had the altenator tested. That came back good. The fuses are all good.

I checked the cable to the negative terminal are was good. The positive terminal and the wires has some corrosion between them. But other than that the wires look good.

Check the mechanical condition of the battery cables; I have seen cables more than once that appeared OK but battery acid had crept under the plastic insulation and dissolved the copper inside.
I confess that this normally shows up first with hard starting or noticeable dimming of the headlights when other accessories are turned on but you have done the other things I would have checked already so it's time to check the cables coming off the battery at both ends.

The charging system on your vehicle is computer controlled . Your vehicle is a rolling computer .The instrument cluster has a microprocessor inside , there is also a body computer ( SJB ) smart junction box , Engine computer etc... they all communicate on a serial data network , C.A.N - controller area network . It's hard to know what's wrong when you don't know how it works . There could be codes stored in the computers , these will not always turn on the check engine light .

sounds like the regulator is bad in the altenator. Start vehicle and disconnect negative cable from battery. If it stays running you have another problem. If it stalls out right away the altenator isnt working.

2000 neon new battery starter clicking

could be a number of things. like the regulator for the altenator sticking. the memory on aftermarket radios could do it. Also amps if you have one.

Replace the altenator. It has gone bad and every thing is running on the battery.

Battery replaced, car won't start

The batery is probably dead. The lights don't take much power but windows and such do. Try jump starting the car. If tha works you may have altenator problems

Is this my alternator or my bealt is not tight enough or some thing else.

this definately sounds like a charging problem, first check the belt going to the alternator and make sure that it is tight. secondly turn off all of your accessories , ( lites, radio, ect. ) start the car then useing a volt meter test the reading on the altenator you should get a reading of at least 13.7 DC Volts as you observe the volts they should go up and down a little bit , fluxuate. this is normal as the altenator is designed to charge and dis-charge. If you are not sure where to test from on the altenator then you can always use the positive and negative battery cables but be sure to start the car then disconnect them so that you are getting the reading from the altenator. be very carefull not to let them touch anything metal. also before you start the car apply the emergency brake, not only for safety but this will stop the daytime running lites from coming on and drawing power, if your vehicle is outfitted with them.
