Question about 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Black smoke and hesitation in first gear only .It's a vw jetta tdi 2006 standard we've checked the intake manifold and it's fine.

My vw golf gt tdi 1.9 is kicking black smoke out. Could the air intake manifold cause me these problems?


Is this all the time or mostly on kick-down?
if there is always thick black smoke it suggests a build up of burnt coke in the system. Unlikely to be air intake related as it is from spent/burnt fuel. A good service of the plugs and filters should resolve this

You're in the TDI (diesel) solutions section so it uses glow plugs.
If it's a petrol engine 2.0L then it would be accessible above and below intake manifold using a swivel spark plug deep socket.

2006 Jetta TDI Stalls in gear


These little engines(although very good little engines)have a problem with carbon build up in the intake manifold. It builds up so bad it begins to choke the engine off. The only solution is to remove the intake and soak with a good solvent over night and will generally take you a good couple of hours to clean out to get to "like new" again. Once this is accomplished, it's like driving your car new again!!

2003 tdi, 54 k miles, bought car new, had manifold cleaned, new glow plugs and harness. car has been driven only short commutes for 3 years. Heavy blue smoke at startup, then it clears right up. No...


valve seals are going. when car sits excess oil gets past the valve seals then when you staRT up it burns the oil off then runs fine and no more blue smoke. It is fine to run like that had the same in a dodge caravan 1996 6cyl. ran another 100 000 km. and still ran fine got rid of it for other reasons.

If you have a lot of black smoke then its over fueling getting to much diesel to the cylinder's. Sounds like an injector problem with the slight knocking noise. Che ck the return pipes are not blocked. If the smoke is dark brown then this is a problem with the valves on the intake manifold which control's the intake of exhaust emmisions.

Unless you want to scorch the nozzles and risk burning a hole in a piston, do NOT use John Deere conditioner in a TDI. The injection pressures/nozzles are not tolerant of John Deere conditioner. smoke = bad.....high egts....and high egts = melting valves.  Smoke means soot, soot clogs the intake manifold and the vanes in the VNT, And soot from the EGR system. And once that soot is in there, it can harden to what you swear is something melded with your intake manifold's metal. Black smoke on a diesel is power you can see but not use, and the amount of over fueling required to produce it can have disastrous effects on the life expectancy of your engine. Melted or holed pistons, coked up injector tips, coked up rings, stuck vanes in the VNT turbo, all problems that can arise from a TDI that's constantly and consistently over fueled past the smoke limit. Leaving it in 2nd gear will have the turbo revving at a high rate and waring it out prematurely and can cause damage to the Vanes in the VNT for constant over boosting due to high revs. Good luck and i'ld look for a different mechanic who under stands Modern Diesel Racine Design Engines.

The only sensible way forward is to get a list of fault codes from the onboard diagnostic system and take it from there. You could either go to a VW dealer, or if you are technically minded you could buy a £15 interface cable, download some free "VAG diagnostic software" and run it on a portable computer.
