I have a S Type. When you park on ANY incline always engage the hand brake first ( I have a BAD habit of not doing this ) Best solution, avoid inclines park on flat surfaces. You can try rocking the car although this is not good for your transmission . You can also try jacking up one of the rear tires once the tire has movement it will free up your locked transmission and you should be good to go. This I have tried and it does work. Your shifter alignment cable may be out of place or the clip on it has become jammed. I hope I helped you. In any case if you have a friend who fixes cars ask for their help first, my Jaguar dealer was going to charge me $1800 and on top of it my car would have had to be towed another $250.

That is because there is wear in your parking mechanism. Get somebody to pull the car in an uphill direction and it will release. Apply parking brake before selecting park and this should not occur again.

When i start my car and go to put it in gear it wont move.

When you say rocky spot, what do you mean? If you mean there were rocks in the roadway, you could have put a small hole in the transmission pan which leaked all the fluid out of it. First thing I would do is check the fluid level on the transmission dipstick and look for leaks on the ground under the car.

Automatic transmission wont shift

98 sidekick.
in the USA we have the 4speed, A/T called. 03-72LE
do post what id does and not do. (full picture)
what wont shift?, the shifter or transmission or both?
won't go to park is clear. but;
1: are you on flat ground or on a hill parking to a curb.
vastly different rules there.
2: wont go into park so where does it go? everywhere buy park?
or flops around , like a loose Popsicle stick?

on flat ground the parking pawl in the tranny goes in easy.
on hills not so.. set the hand brake first, then park last.
on last, off first. (or trouble brews)
or it may not ever get to park. if rammed against curb or rock, or?

It locks up on a hill will not come out of park

The way to avoid this when parking the car on a hill is to apply the parking brake first, allow the car to settle in position by easing off the regular brakes, then put car in park. When it is time to go put the car in gear then release the parking brake. Let the parking brake do all the work. This problem is common to most cars with an automatic transmission. The weight of the car is pressing against the parking mechanism inside the transmission. Many folks have to resort to having a friend rock the car forwards and back to free up the parking mechanism.

Will not go into drive cannot get gear shift to move

Is your car Parked on a hill. Do you use the E-brake.
1st. Make sure you, press the bake peddle.
2nd.If the car is parked on a little hill facing up or down
you'll need to move the car a little. Up or down.
3rd. When the car is parked not level the transmission
parking PAW or PARKING lock inside the Transmission
may have to mush pressure on on it to move easily
So, that is probably the problem. Move the car eighter way
to relieve the presser off the parking Paw. When parking the car
when stoped, Leave your foot presure on the brake pedal.
set the E- Brake then put, the trans into PARK.This way
The presure, in the trans parking lock is not to tight.

  • Check the transmission fluid.
  • If there is a transmission fluid and if its more that 6 months replace it.
  • If its still the same, check the gearings make sure its still in good shape and its still align.

Shift gear is locked I removed the cup holder and pushed in the lever and it still wont go into gear

If your parked on a hill you may have torque lock,if facing down hill you need to push car up hill to release shifter, if facing up hill you need to push car up hill to release shifter. To stop this from happening again apply park brake before putting into park.

I can't get my Gear Shift our of Park. The engine

Common problem.

In future, when on put it in park only AFTER the handbrake is applied. Ideally, foot brake, shift to N, apply handbrake, release foot brake, shift to park.

If the incline isn't steep have someone push car uphill while you gently move gearshift shift out of park. If its a steep hill, call a tow truck and move to a level surface. The parking pawl in the transmission becomes groved over time (and sticks) unless you use the handbreak as described.
