So this morning I stop to fill up with fuel and I can't put the nozzle in the tank! ... station where their fuel nozzle didn't "fit" the capless thing so the door didn't open. ... You need the Ford funnel. ... Like they're saying, if the pump end isn't big enough it won't hit the latch. ... You'll get the nozzle stuck in the filler.

emergency release should be in the trunk as for the closing of the trunk, you need to disconnect the cable at the trunk latch until you can get it fixed

InInside the drivers door in the back of the storage compartment is the switch to open the fuel door.

There is no inside release on the HHR. Simply press in on the rear of the gas fill door and it will "pop" open. Make sure you press it in again when you close it...

Have you looked in the trunk on the side that the gas tank is on? There may be a fuel release switch. Couple of other things to try is to unlock all your doors from the inside of your car and/ or try pushing in and out on the gas door over and over until, hopefully, it triggers the device. There is no button to open the gas door from the inside of the car.  As long as the doors are unlocked, you should be able to push in the far right side of the gas door and the left side will pop open. I too spent hours looking for this non existent button..I went as far as to going back to the car dealership.

I had one gas door solenoid replaced under warranty. Since then I have just shot a bit of WD40 onto the post comng from the solenoid that holds the door closed. Do this at each oil change and the problems should stop.
