I am going to assume you mean the piston on the brake caliper and not one of the engine cylinders. Once the caliper bolts are removed, slide the caliper off of the rotor, and pop out the brake pads. Use a piece of clothes hanger wire to hold up the caliper so it is not hanging by the brake hose. Take the cap off of the brake master cylinder and check the fluid level. If the fluid level is less than half an inch of the full mark, drain some of the fluid out using a clean squeeze bottle. DO NOT reuse the old brake fluid. Take a large C-clamp and place the swivel foot into the cup of the brake piston and the other end over the back of the caliper, and slowly tighten until the piston has gone all the way in. Do not use a slip joint wrench or you might do some damage to the seals or piston. Put the new pads in place, slide the caliper back over the rotor, and reinstall the mounting bolts. Repeat operation on the other side of the vehicle. Top off the brake fluid with fresh clean fluid, pump the brake peddle several times to get the pistons back out to their working positions, add any additional fluid if needed, and take for a test drive.

Did you manually take apart the motor and rebuild it?

Pistons have Piston Pins that the piston to a crank shaft. If the piston pin isn't set in place through the piston properly, than this could be your issue.

Im doing my back brakes on my 2002 golf tdi. i have the caliper off. i was trying to put my C clamp on it and push it back so i can make room for the new pads and rotor. But Im hitting resisitance. It...

The brakes have an automatic emergency brake adjustment and because of this a special technique is required to get the piston pushed back in. Hopefully you didn't force it and damage it. You can also buy a special tool that will do the job but you can also use a C-clamp and a pair of channel lock pliers. Put the C-clamp on and put a little bit of pressure on the piston. With the channel locks grab the metal edge of the piston and twist it (can't remember the direction but it will be apparent when you do this) until the C-clamp loosens up a bit. Adjust the C-clamp to put some pressure on the piston again and twist the piston again. This will slowly work the piston back to where you can install the new pads. Be careful not to pinch the rubber boot when you are grabbing the piston edge with the pliers.

Changing front and back brakes on vw golf tdi 54 plate

Replacing brake pads or rotors does not need to be difficult if you have the right tools. Volkswagen and Audi rear calipers require that the piston be rotated while being pushed back into the caliper.
