Its an easy project just have to drop the tranny pan and switch it out. you will get a new pan seal with it just remember not to over tighten the bolts

Transmission malfunction light on

You may just be low on fluid. There is a sensor for everything now. If the transmission is still functioning properly, you may just want to change fluid and filters for good measure. It is (I'm guessing...) probably the original fluid. Most don't change tranny fluid till there's an issue.

My transmission fluid turned brown. I beleive from getting hot.The bad radiator I think caused this. Should I change the fluid or leave it alone?

You are right to look at the tranny fluid as worn...as it has turned brown. This happens naturally over time and mileage. Depending on the mileage, sometimes it is not recommended to open the transmission pan to change fluid and filter. If over 100,000 miles, check with your local shop for tranny flush or fluid filter change per warranty consideration. You can add a bottle of Lucas Oil Transmission Stabilizer to your tranny without having to drain any fluids. I have used this often on higher mileage cars with great success. The bottle costs about $11. even at your local Walmart:) Read the instructions carefully as the full bottle contents need to be added with engine running and tranny warm. Hope this helps.

How do i check the transmission fluid and change it in a 2005 chevy colbalt, and where does the speedometer cable connect into the transmission at?

There is no dipstick on this tranny (4T40E). On the passenger side of the tranny just beside the output axle seal, there is an 11mm 7/16" bolt head. With the vehicle running in park remove the bolt. If tranny fluid runs out it was over filled. On the top Drivers side of tranny, there is a red plastic cap (marked vent). Remove and add fluid here if low. Once the fluid runs out of bolt hole its at correct level. To do tranny fluid and filter change, loosen off all the pan bolts, drain. Filter is located under pan. Do not remove the bolt with engine off, it will lower the tranny fluid level. Fill with approximately 6.5 qts or lts. Start engine, remove bolt, let run out, when it quits its full. This doesn't change all 16qts ( the torque converter and valve body hold 8 or more), if you want complete change, get it flushed at a shop. It doesn't have a speedo cable anymore either. It has VSS's (vehicle speed sensors) in the tranny and also use wheel speed sensors in the ABS system to calculate speed for different systems. ABS, Cluster, Cruise control, Tranny shifting etc.

I have a 2005 Mazda RX-8. It is an automatic. I am getting slippage in the transmission when driving it. I would like to change the transmission fluid myself. I am curious as to whether there is a filter...

there is a filter and a gasket, just change it don't flush it if it has a lot of miles on the fluid it could brake some thing loose in side you tranny.

I just want to know where the transmission filter is on a 2005 Hyundai Elantra and how often the filter and fluid need changing?

Most Japanese/Korean made cars actually have no transmission filter...such as hyundai, toyota, honda. Fluid changes should be listed in your owners manual...I think its between 60,000-80,000kms...but I changed mine earlier in my elantra and added in some Lucas for trannys since I noticed mine shifting hard between second and third...cleared it up.

Change transmission fluid and filter

You need special tools to do that plus you need to change both differentials and transfer case oil so my advise is just find a good mechanic who will do it for cheap. Thats what I just did anyways and it ended up being $240 for everything plus $50 for the special tranny fluid that I had to buy myself at the dealership.

Where's transmission filter located?

Filter is not in the pan- my wife has an '03 Tribute with the 3.0, and trust me, it's not under the pan. From everything I have read, it's inside the tranny someplace and not accessible without tearing the thing out and down.

And, yes there is a drain plug on the side/bottom of the tranny case- you can use a 3/8" ratchet w/o a socket on it to loosen/tighten.
