    i am going to try to change rear axle bearings on 94 cherokee are there any surprizes i should beaware of

Only thing is that the axles are held in by "c" clips and you need to remove the spider gear shaft to get them out. (inside the differential)

I was told I need a new rear barring and axle seal how do I change it?


You have to pull the cover off the rear end and let the fluid drain. Then there is a single small bolt that holds a pin in for the spider gears. You must remove the bolt, pin and spider gears. Then take the wheel and brake drum off the side you want to change. Once thats off you can push the axle in and a clip should fall off the axle inside the carrier. Then you can pull the axle out exposing the seal and bearing you need to change. Just use a seal pulling tool to pull the old seal out and the bearing is under that. It is pressed in so it can be hard to get out. Lots of times they have to be cut out. To put the new bearing back in just use a hammer and socket that is close to the size of the outter edge of the bearing. If you put the bearing in the freezer overnight it will go in a lot easier. Then tap a new seal in and put everything back together and refill the rear end with GL5 put the posi additive in if you have a posi trac rear end. Hope this helps good luck.

YOU HAVE TO SAFELY RAISE SUPPORT VECHICLE MAKE SURE ITS ON A SOLID LEVEL GROUND.THEN YOU REMOVE THE WHEELS THE BRAKE DRUM OR DISC.THEN YOU REMOVE THE NUTS THAT ATTACH THE OUTER SEAL RETAINER AND BRAKE BACKING PLATETO THE AXLE SHAFT TUBE.DISCARD THE NUTS.REMOVE AXLE SHAFT FROM HOUSING.WITH AN AXLE PULLER ATTACHED TO A SLIDE HAMMER.DISCARD INNER AXLE SEALPOSITION THE AXLE SHAFT IN A VISE.REMOVE THE RETAINING RING BY DRILLING A 1/4 HOLE ABOUT 3/4 OF THE WAY THROUGH THE RING. THEN USING A COLD CHISEL OVER THE HOLE.SPLIT THE RING.REMOVE THE BEARING WITH A ARBOR PRESS DISCARD THE SEAL AND REMOVE THE RETAINER PLATE.TO INSTALL - CLEAN THEN APPLY A THIN COATING OF WHEEL BEARING LUBRICANT TO THE BEARING AND SEAL CONTACT SURFACES APPLY WHEEL BEARING LUBRICANT TO THE LIPS OF THE REPLACEMENT INNER AND OUTER SEALS.INSTALL THE INNER SEAL WITH THE OPEN END OF THE SEAL FACING INWARD ENSURE IT IS COMPLETELY SEATED.INSTALL THE RETAINER PLATE AND THE OUTER SEAL ON THE SHAFT.ENSURE THE OPEN END OF THE SEAL FACES TOWARD THE AXLE SHAFT BEARING.PACK THE REPLACEMENT BEARING WITH WHEEL BEARING LUBRICANT AND POSITION ON THE AXLE SHAFT PRESS INTO PLACE.PRESS A REPLACEMENT BEARING RETAINER ON THE AXLE SHAFT AGAINST THE BEARING.INSTALL THE AXLE INTO THE AXLE TUBE.POSITION AND ALIGN THE SEAL RETAINER AND BRAKE SUPPORT PLATE AND INSTALL REPLACEMENT ATTACHING NUTS.TIGHTEN NUTS TO 32 FT LBS.INSTALL BRAKE ASSEMBLY WHEELS LOWER VECHICLE. Rear axle bearing problem on 2002 jeep grand cherokee, changed twice, problem returns


you need to check the rear end fluid level,and you might have to put an oversize bearing in if the housing is scoring the bearing race.have a shop install it.

Replace the rear wheel bearing


better check a manual, The ones I have done do not have c-clips in the diff. You remove 4 nuts behind the brake backing plate, then use a slide hammer to pull out the axle shafts. Then the bearing retainer must be removed (cut or drill into it, the crack it with a hammer blow from a chisel), it should slide off the axle. Then use a bearing splitter and a press to remove the bearing. To install use a long pipe and press to install the new bearing and retainer. Change the seal while your in there. Hope this helps.

Replacing a rear axle on a 94 jeep grand cherokee 2wd


take the rear cover off of the rear end. make sure you have something to let the fluid drain in. turn the carrier until you see a 5/16ths bolt. take the bolt out and let the pin in the center of the carrier slide down enough to be able to slide the axle inward. that will release the c-clip. then when the c-clip i removed you can just pull the axle out of the houseing but mak sure to not let the carrier spin any while you are pulling the axle out.

Leaking rear axel seal


  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel Brake caliper and rotor, if equipped Brake drum, if equipped Axle retainer nuts Axle shaft, seal and bearing assembly
  2. Split the bearing retainer with a chisel and remove the retainer ring.
  3. Press the bearing off the axle shaft.
  4. Remove the axle seal and retaining plate.

Rear bearing


rear axle bearings I assume? Pull the diff cover, rotate the carrier so you can remove the pin from the center of the 4 spyder gears, push the axle in slightly, and remove large c clip from the carrier area. The axle will pull right out! These vehicles are hard on axle bearings. Look them all over.

Axcel rear noisy


Your carrier bearings and possibly the pinion bearings are the source if the noise is a low pitched grumble or gravelly noise that starts just about 20 mph and up. If it is louder when quickly changing lanes to the left, it is probably the right wheel bearing, and if it is louder when changing lanes to the right, it is the left wheel bearing. If it is a whine that is really annoying at 45-65 mph, your ring and pinion are probably worn beyond their design specification limit. If your U-joints are OK, but you can hear a loud clunk from the rear when you get on and off the throttle, you definitely have play in your ring and pinion. Have the cover removed and you can sheck this easily. I have worked on several Jeep Grand Cherokee differentials, and the ring an pinion has needed replacing on them all. A few had bad bearings, too. You should probably replace the bearings and the ring and pinion, because the labor is nearly the same and the parts are just a bit more. If you look through the forums on the www you will find many people that replaced the bearings to fix the grumble, only to finish the job and find out they also have the whine.
