Next to the key hole there is a spot to put in a paper clip. there is a special tool that is a bit more rugged. the key has to be in the 1st position (not off). this can be really tricky and sometimes we can work for hours trying to get a lock cylinder out.Your best bet is to find something that more rugged than a paper clip and stick with it, can be really frustrating

You must drill it out using progressively larger drill bits until it comes out. A real fun job, trust me.

How do I ge my key out of the ignition with out brakng it?

Remove the trims from around the ignition barrel.
There should be a small metal button to press in whenever the key is in either position 1 or 2 on the ignition barrel.
This will release the barrel from the housing.
Plenty of lubricant around the barrel and the key should come free.

My bmw 316i model 1997 has problem releasing the steering lock mechanism. Key also battles to staert car.

order a new ignition barrel from your local BMW agent before your lock packs up all together and you will have an even bigger problem, to remove your barrell turn your key to the first position then insert a 1.2mm rod or drill down the little hole in the edge of the chrome key slot to push down the detent that hold the barrell in, pulll out old barrell with the key then fit new one.

The ignition switch seized up. how do you remove the tumbler

you will have to split the ignition barrel, using either a hammer and small thin chisel or an old screw driver, if you split both side opposite the barrel will fall out, it will in some cases leave the barrel stalk in the black box (the electrical black plastic box at the other side of the barrel housing) to remove this turn with a screwdriver to either position 1 or position 2, at the front of the barrel housing is a release pin hole which will need a small allen key or pot rivet pushing into it to release the barrel stalk, remove with pliars or with flat blade screw drive, place key in new barrell hold thumb over secure pin holding it into the new barrel, then gently turn key 90 degrees, and offer into barrel housing, ensure the secure pin is at all time still into the barrel, slide the barrel into houseing slowly until you mate up the barrel stalk to the black box, and slide in until you hear the secure pin click into place, turn key back to zere and remove slowly, the new barrel is fitted. should take about an hour from start to finish, if it was not seized no more than 15 min to complete. hope this helps.

Hi. i have just replaced a barrel on a bmw 316i auto n reg. this barrel i bought second-h. it also came with this box,now this is were i need some assistance.this box has the letters [ews 11]and 61.35-8...

Im presuming you are talking about the wires which come from the switch unit at the side of the switch housing, if you took the old one off it should be easy, if you didnt look to the side of the steering column and look for an empty socket your plug wont go into the wrong socket, remember you have to refit the ring round the replacement ignition lock as this "reads" the information on your key and allows you to start the engine

had this problem myself recently and i had to remove steering wheel and side covers remove shear bolts from lock housing using a smal chisel that lets you lake of lock housing and steering lock to replace them your local bm dealer should be able to order the correct one to fit your key, your car will still run with key out but you have to insert it to start it.

How to remove ignition barrel from 1997 toyota celica

Remove the plastic covers around the ignition switch, insert the key in the ignition and turn the key to ignition on position (just before start position) now locate the pin on the side of the ignition switch which is flush with the aluminium housing holding the barrel, the pin is about 3 mm in diameter.Gently press the pin inwards (which is spring loaded) with a sharp pointed object e.g small screwdriver and at the same time while holding the pin, pull on the ignition key as if you want to remove the key, and the barrel will slide out completely.

We have a p reg bmw

Down beside the key slot there is a tiny pin hole, you need a long thin piece of wire just big enough to fit the hole, then put the key in and turn it to the first auxillary position, push the piece of wire into the hole and the barrel will pull out of the housing with the key. regards, steve
