1999 Dodge Intrepid brake vibration

Sometimes, ( but not all the time ), when I hit the brakes the will be a
stuttering or vibration. The ABS light stays on and has been on for about 4 years.. The mechanic I took it to said it was probably a bad ABS module which would cost about $ 400 to replace ( less expensive if he could get one from junk yard. ) He said don't worry too much because I still have conventional braking system. Which is fine -no problems being able to stop. The vibration really doesn't start until after I've driven for awhile and then sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't. I've been told that a bad alignment or ball joint may cause this problem. Any ideas from anyone? thank you.

Actually, the vibration will happen at anywhere between 20 - 60 mph. If I step on the brakes with a hard foot, I don't have the vibration until I release and brake again at a slower speed. I don't

understand why sometimes it's worse than other times. And when I first start to drive, it doesn't happen at all until I have used the brakes 10-15 times. I will do as you suggest. Thank you for your help.

bunnydawg - Quite honestly, I don't know. When my mechanic said the ABS module was bad and needed to be replaced, I just assumed I had lost the ABS function but could still rely on the conventional brake system. He did replace both front and rear pads

but I can't recall if the ABS light came on before or after he did that. The brakes work great - but the vibration can be really bad sometimes. If I can find the module, I just might yank it out and see what happens.. Hope some of this helps. Thank you

bunnydawg - very, very good advice. Thank you very much. That's a very good way to verify / eliminate this issue and then go on from there. Again, thank you.

"yanking it out" isn't an option actually. you can pull the main fuse for the abs and still have regular brakes tho and that would rule out the abs (or let you know that is the cause of the issue"

the vibration or stuttering that you mention.... do you mean that the abs kicks on for no apparent reason ?

Yeah this can be an alignment problem, because in that case while applying brakes the car slows down and starts vibrating. but it only happens at higher speeds or too low speeds. If your car vibrates on the normal speeds, get your braking pads checked first  and then the whole braking system. Check if its working properly..

Might as well make it so you can rate my answer to you.... by the way the fuse should be located in the engine compartment fuse box near the battery.... it's often a very large fuse.

Please take a moment to rate this... thanks.

If you lose the speedometer, replace the rear differential speed sensor on top. If the speedo is ok, then it's your ABS pump/solenoid unit in the engine compartment left rear side. Most of the 99's have only the rear ABS, not front so don't look at the front brakes for the issue.

Sounds like a major short. Might try abs disconnect and see what happens. But first look for direct short in wires around brake pedal and under hood around alternator.

when brake light is constantly on it normally means the rear brake light dont work (bulb blown) ABS normally means sensors pushed too far or teeth on abs cv axle could be damaged or bent. check that first.
