When you say the steering goes out, what do you mean? Give a little more detail of the symptoms you are having with the vehicle. Good Luck, RAC

If the steering assist only goes out one way, and has assist the other direction the rack & pinion is faulty. You will need to have it replaced. It is not particularly difficult to replace, although you do have to lower the subframe to get it out. If you do not have access to a vehicle lift this could be tough to accomplish safely. After replacement you will also need to have the car aligned. You may be better off taking it somewhere for the repair.

I had a similar problem.
my power steering would lock up when I would break and turn at the same time (i.e. when parallel parking).
I needed new power steering pulley parts and a new serpentine belt.
The problem occurred out of nowhere, just started one day when I was parallel parking. I took it to the shop and it cost me under $200 to fix.

It sounds like the valve body on the steering box has dirt or debri in the valve body causing it to keep the valve that switches the fluid to the right or left to become stuck, thus no power assist. There is really no way to repair this short of rebuilding the steering system assembly. Besides this it would be advisable to include flushing out the power steering pump to insure that there is no foreign debri left in the system to replug the new assembly. Good Luck, RAC

Our intake gasket on our 2002 Chevy Malibu is leaking coolant. Is this a problem that can be repaired in an at home garage by a friend who is a mechanic? Or is the job too big and needs more than your...

Any job can be done at home provided you or your mechanic friend has the proper tools and understanding to perform the job. If you're a beginning do it yourselfer or just need a refresher I would highly advise getting yourself a service manual for your vehicle at your local auto parts store. It will have decent instructions and pictures in performing most of the jobs you may encounter for your vehicle. Also you may want to take pictures or make notes before anyone removes any components or lines in order to remove your intake. If you need any help with this procedure let me know and good luck

Steering rack removal

Steering rack removal is a pretty serious job, Simple to explain. It has 2 tie rods to disconnect, usaly 2 big bolts or nuts, The steering shaft bolt. And the lines to disconnect, The hard part will be getting it out. Most can be manouvered out either side, But theres a chance you may have to drop the subframe.
