Re: engine no crank dash lights go crazy when key is on
It sounds like your alternator quit charging and then your battery died. do you have a battery charger? if so, charge the battery and try to start it. If it starts but the charging light is on, you likely need an alternator. Most auto parts stores can test it for you.
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

Anti-theft system can keep vehicle from starting , Alarm is for vehicle content theft , open door without key alarm sounds (horns) ! PATS - passive anti theft system PATS enables and disables the engine from starting ,it will not cause the engine to die ! You have some other kind of problem ! If the vehicle engine doesn't turn over an red light on top of dash flashes fast ,then you have anti-theft system problem !
PATS differs from the perimeter anti-theft system in that PATS enables and disables the engine from starting. If equipped, the perimeter anti-theft system protects the perimeter of the vehicle (doors, hood and trunk) and sounds an alarm.
If the anti theft light is blinking and you say that everything else fine.. My first thought is that the key is not programmed to the vehicle. The key has a internal chip that must be programmed to vehicle in order to start. Now my other question is, Is the key your using for the vehicle the original key or have you just recently had a key made? Regardless, in order for the yur Tribute to start, the key. Or keys have to be program to vehicle by your neighbor dealership. Thats the reason for your anti theft light is blinking
The problem may not be with anti-theft but with a bad fuel pump,cam/crank sensor etc. Also, you may try unlocking the drivers door with the key. On most cars that is the standard method for disabling the security system.
If the security system is at fault, the security light should be flashing or staying on.
Do the warning lights come on the dash when you turn the key on ? Can you jumper the starter relay and make it crank ?
Do you have the year make and model.? If it is a anti theift with a key immobilizer the vehicle will just start and idle for a few seconds then shut off and the anti theft light will remain on or be blinking. Then we know you are dealing with the anti theft. do you have another key to crank the engine if you do use a spare key and hold the key next to the immobilizer and crank the engine see if that will give if it doesnt try this method. roll the window down with window down disconnect the negative battery cable wait 5 minutes reconnect put the key in the ignition but dont crank it just yet turn it in the on spot not the crank for 2 minutes then crank it and see if that start the vehicle . If this doesnt work then you will need to call a mobile locksmith who reprograms the immobilizer
If the security or anti-theft light is flashing when you attempt to start your car, and the engine does not crank or does not start, you have an anti-theft problem. The system may not be recognizing your key's key-less entry signal, or there may be a fault in the anti-theft module or wiring. There is a reset procedure to stop this anti-theft light flashing.many a times this helps
The reset procedure is as follows:--
Reset the alarm by locking and unlocking the drivers side door.Do this a couple of times and then check it will reset the factory security system .If the reset procedure does not helps then its time to get the anti-theft system checked. There is a short circuit in the anti-theft system wiring. For more detailed help on this anti-theft light blinking issues please click on the link belowhttp://www.aa1car.com/library/troubleshoot_antitheft_system.htm Thanks. you can rate this solution and show your appreciation.
Try to do the crank relearn: Ensure that your battery is fully charged before attempting the relearn procedure. Do not leave any battery charger or jumper cables attached to the battery. Close the hood completely. Some applications require that the doors remain closed during the procedure. 96-99 S10 1. Rotate the key to the start position to attempt to start the vehicle (the vehicle will not start). Allow the key to return to the all position (same as if the vehicle would have started). The theft system light will flash (or stay lit) on the dash for approximately 10 minutes. 2. When the theft system telltale stops flashing (or turns oft) turn the key to the off position for 5 seconds and then attempt tostart the vehicle. The vehicle should start on this cycle. 3. Once the vehicle is running, the password relearn is complete.
