This could be a few things. Check that if it is a newer car, thta the bleed plug for the cooling system has been bled. Some cars have two. Thermostat is the most common. make sure it is installed correctly too. Check that the water pump is not leaking and also that it rotates without noise and does not wiggle. You may need to take the serpintine belt off to do this. The last one could be that the wires to the sensor or even the sensor are bad.

Check engine light is on and engine overheats, engine runs smooth

autoparts places offer free check engine light scans. They will tell you what the code is for.
Running heat to stop overheat is a bad idea other than to get you home or to a mechanic.
Could be water pump, thermostat, or something much worse.
I had check engine light for a spark plug misfire.
Turns out the head was cracked and that cylinder was filling with water. (over heat & misfire)
Scan the code and get back to me if they don't give you the solution.

Interference or non interference engine

VW gas engines are interference engines. Not sure about the diesel ones. If you have had a timing belt fiasco, then you will have to take the head to a shop. BE SURE they know something about VW engines. I took mine to a reputable engine rebuilder but I had to take it apart again and take the head back because they didn't know to check everything. The first time they replaced bent valves, the second they had to replace valve guides and shave the head. When you get the head back from the shop, turn it upside down and pour water into the combustion chambers. If it leaks out the valves then the head has to go back, it won't work. Your engine will run lean and overheat. Hope this helps.

I have 1996 Honda Accord. The vehicle overheats, especially when the Air Conditioning is turned on. There is no thermostat in the car and the cooling fan doesn't work. Does it just need a new cooling fan?

If you run the vehicle with an inoperable radiator cooling fan you will overheat and destroy the engine. You will just make the problem even worse by running the aircon. The car should not be driven with an inoperable cooling fan.

A thermostat should be re-installed in the engine's cooling system and a new cooling fan installed.

If you have been running the vehicle with this overheat condition for some time you may well have already damaged the engine, the first sign of which may well be a blown head gasket and a damaged engine head.

If you damage the engine from overheating, repair costs can easily exceed the market value of this 1996 model car.

Still overheating after head is skimmed

waterpump? No movement of water/coolant, engine overheats. Engine overheats, warp heads. Next time you rip a head off, check gasket to see if head gasket failed or if there is a different cause to car overheating.

Overheating

I would recommend that you bleed all air out of the cooling system. The bleeder valve is located on top of the engine. Once engine starts to overheat or when you can hear bubbling back into the overflow bottle, turn car off and open bleeder valve. If you see bubbling you have air in your system. Bleed the system a couple of times and see if this helps.A heat sensor sending unit which controls activation of the electric fan could also have failed. But if the heat sensor is properly working then check the radiator cap is it properly fitted or got loose. If its loose it will release the pressure and car will overheat. But if the radiator cap is properly closed. Then its time to check the HEAD GASKET.As you have replaced the head gasket still get it checked is it overheating very quickly or is the head gasket placed properly also check the coolant level in the car. Thanks. you can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

It overheats

A new head gasket can't fixed warped heads. This engine must have seriously overheated at one time. Time for a new engine.
