I have a 2000 Saturn sl 1.9L sohc. My cooling fan is not coming on. I replaced the temperature sending, which did read a temperature on my instrument cluster, before and after replacement. If I have the vehicle running and disconnect the squeeze connector from the sending unit the fan will run continuously, but if the vehicle is off and the key is in the run position, the fan will not run. likewise the fan does not kick on at all while the connector is on the sending unit. also when I replaced the sending unit, the car was parked on a slight incline toward the passenger side. it seemed I lost more coolant than I replaced. I filled it until the reservoir was full, about 1/3 bottle of premix, then started the vehicle to suck the coolant through the system, but it wouldn't take anymore. so I am wondering if there is air trapped in the system.

First, is/was the temp guage showing over heating? If so you should have checked/ replaced the fan temperature switch on the radiator ( or follow the fan wiring to it's location) depending on air temp, and driving conditions, the motor may not need the fan. If it's not, cover the rad with something{paper, plastic} until the guage begins to show overheat condition, then the fan should start. # DO NOT LET IT GET INTO THE RED ZONE! If you keep the reservoir closed, the radiator will **** up the coolant after warming/running, and a cool down.

Testimonial: "Yes I was having issues with it overheating. Highway driving was ok, it was when I was driving slowly through town, or always at a drive through for say McDonalds It would start overheating through the reservoir."

SOURCE: 1996 Saturn SL, 4 cylinder,

I also had the same problem with my 1996 Saturn SL1, and it also was the starter. I thought it was an electrical problem until, just on a whim I pulled the starter. One of the brushes was almost gone and the commutator looked like hell. I cleaned up the commutator and brushes, and it spun like a top for about a month, until the worn out brush finally died. I also ordered a new starter the same day of the cleaning. Just a word of advice if you will be buying a new starter, go on Ebay Motors and find the store dbelectrical. They sell brand new starters for $49.95 with no core charge plus $12 UPS shipping. So $61.95 vs $150+ at your local parts store....Myself and my friend from work have both bought and daily use starters from them with no problems or complaints to report.

SOURCE: 2003 Saturn Vue electric fan always running

Check the fan relay, probably in fuse box in the engine compartment. Check owners manual to be sure. I have seen these melt causing fan to run all the time.

SOURCE: High Idle 2000 Saturn S series

The first issue you have to deal with is the overheating. the best way to takle this prob is start with cheapest to replace. check termostat and coolant. then pull the coolant temp sensor its on right side of engine, really easy to pull. make sure its fine. to check cooling fan is working just turn car on and turn ac on. the cooling fan kicks on when ac button is pressed on.

My 2000 Saturn SL2 is overheating. At first it would overheat when sitting idle and then once speed reached 35+mph it would cool off, but now it gets hot and stays. What is causing this?

Well, the overheating at an idle would normally be caused by your cooling fan not engaging. I would first check to see if you fan is working by turning on your a/c (this will override the fan sensor and turn it on before it gets above operating temperature). If it doesn't come on you should check your AUX. Fan Relay. If thats ok, you probably need a new fan motor but first replace your coolant temp. sensor as this is an inexpensive parts and may save you quite a bit of money (also your vehicle may be running at the normal temperature but your temp sensor may be sending a signal telling you it's hot). This will explain why it was overheating at an idle. As far as it overheating while driving, you should first check to see if your water pump is leaking and make sure your belt is intact. If the water pump pulley is not spinning your belt will be glossy from excessive heat from friction. If your water pump is good and you can spin the pulley by hand, you should then consider when the last time you replaced the thermostat as it may be stuck closed. also your radiator may have some blockages in it so I would replace the thermostat, drain the coolant by removing the lower hose and spray a hose into the radiator until the water comes out looking pretty clear. I hope this helps you figure this out.

Saturn 96 sohc...leak of preston from the tank cap

You should be able to inspect the tank to see if there is any damage around the place where the rubber seal on the cap fits. If there is, it will need to be replaced.

Coolant system

The car overheats because the fan system is not working. The engine coolant sensor tells the computer to turn on the fan when it gets hot and also sends temperature readings through the computer to the heat gauge. Try turning the AC on if you have it--it should immediately start the cooling fan. If nothing, check the fan fuse and relay. It's also possible that the fan motor is frozen due to bad bearings. Try replacing the coolant temperature sensor to see if that restores the gauge readings. Hope some of this helps!
