Hard to start when warmed up

I have a '96 GMC Jimmy 4.3 with appox 160K miles, iwth a starting problem. It starts easy when cold, but when warmed up, shut off for 15 minutes or more, it requires 5 to 10 seconds of cranking before it will start. One it starts, it idles rough briefly, and then runs good. I took it to a local Mechanic shop and they said it has expected pressure, but the flow was down. They suggested replacing the fuel pump. Could this be a fuel pressure regulator problem?

It sounds like you are on the right path here, but I would take the truck back to perform the fuel pressure test again and this time let the truck sit for 20-30 minutes with the fuel pressure guage on it and look for how much the pressure drops in that amount of time. The pressure should not drop over 5-10 psi in the 30 minutes or so. If it does then I would suspect the pressure loss to be at the fuel injector (CFI) if this truck is a vortec equipped 4.3L. The regulator is internal of the upper intake plenum and you will have to remove the upper intake plenum to inspect it. If, when you get the upper intake plenum off, you find residual fuel around the regulator or any of the hoses or poppet injectors replace as necessary. This is a very common problem for these vehicles with high mileage. Parts are available at the local auto parts store.

Hope this helps.

It could be either one they both control fuel pressure.

96 jimmy shuts off while running and will turn back on, changed control module and the throttle body and MAF sensor. told by dealer to change this and problem would be fixed, problem not fixed.

i have had problems with the fuel pump relays heating up and loosing contact. it will not trigger a code and the only way to track it is to attatch a fuel pressure gauge to the system and wait for it to die. chances are you will see the pressure drop to 0 psi.

Hard starting after sitting awhile

My 98 Jimmy runs on synthetic oil and starts well after sitting in cold weather. If the weather is the problem, try checking that. If it is warm... sorry no ideas.

Hard start when cold/first start in morning

The pressure relief valve is in the spider fuel injector not the fuel pump. We have had our 94 gmc jimmy for 4 years & have had to replace the fuel injector 4 times which cost right at $500 each time for the part. Yes the spider fuel injector cost averages around $500.
