I had a vehicle that did the same thing. Pull a spark plug. Place something into the cylinder to touch the top of the piston.(rounded as to not scratch the piston). BY HAND with a ratchet move the crank back and forth a little bit.( the amount of your play and see if the piston is going up ,or down. If it does not.... you have a broken crank. My situation was on a monte carlo

Does my astro van use a timing belt for the water pump?

Your water pump is driven externally by the serpentine belt...your starting problem is not water pump related...have the Crank Position Sensor tested...an intermittent starting problem like yours is usually caused by this sensor being cracked...Much less costly!! Hope this helps.

I have a 1998 chevy astro and for clerification would like to know where the alternator is located.....any help would be appreciated

As I said a few minutes ago ... your alternator is driven by a belt. Open the hood ... find the belt ... you will find the alternator ... and the power steering pump and the A/C compressor and the water pump and the air pump ... But you MUST open the hood first.

My 94 astro is making nosies by the belt or the tenchner i dont no? which one is it?

If the belt is tight ? It might be the tensioner. The tension wheel shouldn't have any play at all. If you can grab it and move it slightly? It is bad . If its tight. Take the belt off and try all the pulleys for play. The alternator and the water pump. I first if the belt is cracked and old or is lose? i would replace the belt ori would try tightening it

How to replace a fan belt.

Loosen the alternator and remove the belt. After you put on the new belt pull back on the alternator until the belt is tight and tighten the belt tension.

How do you replace alternator on 2002 Chevrolet Astro?

relieve the tension on the belt so to remove it, then check for a bolt in the bottom of the alternator if not one use a pry bar to loosen

When I turn on the rear defoster the engine squeals

This is your alternator belt squealing. The belt needs to be tightened or replaced. When the defroster comes on, it puts more load on the alternator causing the belt to slip.

Changing alternator belt in 1977 Delta 88

On the older cars, the alternator was attached by two mounting bolts. The long bolt goes through the alternator and is held on by a hex nut. The short bolt goes through a slotted curved piece into the alternator and is used for adjusting tension on the belt.

Depending on the location of the alternator, it may require you to work from the top of the engine or in some cases from under the car. Determine if any other belt is blocking the alternator belt. If so, this belt will have to be removed first to access the alternator belt.

Use a little penetrating fluid (e.g. PB Blaster) on the threads of both bolts and let it soak in to loosen up any corrosion. Using two wrenches/sockets(one to hold and one to loosen), loosen the long pivot mounting bolt; but do not remove. Then use a wrench or socket to loosen the short bolt and push the alternator towards the engine to allow the belt to be removed.

Installation is the reverse. You will have to lift the alternator up and outward to tighten the belt prior to tightening the short bolt. Then tighten the long bolt. Check tension by pressing down on the midpoint along the longest span between pulleys. Belt should not deflect more than 1/2 to 3/4 inch. If it does, loosen the two bolts and re-tension (you may need a pry bar for adjustment). Some setups use an idler pulley for adjusting tension.
