Question about 1991 Chrysler New Yorker

1 Answer

Hard shift, lost of all but one grear when hot.

I have a 1991 Chrysler New Yorker Fifth Ave. with a 3.3 liter V6 with automatic transmission. I Love the car in its near new condition but the Transmission is bothering me. When the car first fires up in the morning and even after a good warm up... everything is fine. However after driving around town or in a parking lot for a while(that was the first time it did it) the transmission will not shift out of first gear. Also it is really hard to not notice that after the transmission gets warm (i.e only after about 20 min. of driving) the transmission stalls when going from reverse to drive and when it goes... it slams! This all seems to me like heat related problems and the problems get worse if the car is running on the hot side of "normal" as indicated by the dash. If I lose the gears(only happened three times in 6 months) i pull over and sit for twenty min or so with the engine off and everything is fine (still hard shifting though) Just for clarification, when the car does shift while driving... regardless of heat, it shifts smoothly through all gears. Only hard shifts from reverse to drive. It was suggested to change the filter and fluid but before i venture into that i wanna know if there is possibly a way to add an external transmission cooler and if you think this might solve the problem. Hopefully someone has a much better and simpler solution LOL. I thank you for your time!

OK it is important to make sure you never run your transmission hot, ever that is how you destroy it,, the cooler just like the post ubove sometimes is mixed with your regular radiator sometime is separate, but you can always get a new 40 dollar axsilary one from auto zone, it just connect to your transmission its a loop, but its very very important you check it, i once had a chrisler labaron the round style 4 door, and it would always run hot and coolent was fresh, water pump good, but i had to take the thermostat out because it just would not absolutly would not be good enoff to cool the motor, this also goes for the transmission, i belive its the same style car you need to put a new separate cooler radiator on asap. PS if you read this and the car died, go to advanced and buy 2 bottles of sea foam trans tune, it will make the transmission work again like new for about 3,000 then it will die again, but hopefuly you can sell it before that happens. Anyway good luck sorry i cant spell

Strip the autobox out and either overhaul it or better still put a manual gearbox into it,if one is made for it that is .Although its ma 91 so its now become a classic car in some countries wouldnt it be cheaper to buy a newer car like a nice little VW manual diesel or a citreon diesel ,far superior cars and cost a lot less to run so what you save on fuel you can afford to buy a new vehicle

1991 Chrysler New Yorker, FIFTH AVENUE. Power Antenna stuck.

sound's like the motor is bad if you have someone turn it on as you stand by to hear the motor kick on would be the best way to know. if it is a good motor it is off track if that's the case turn it on and try to get it with a pair of needle noise pliars and pull it out.

The AC and power windows just stopped functioning yesterday, on my 1991 Chrysler Imperial. I don't see a fuse that has both functions associated. Any help would be great. Thanks David

Take a look at thse two and replace them:

Fig. 3: Relay and flasher module — Dynasty, New Yorker (1989–93), Fifth Ave. and Imperial

(This is for the power windows)

The fuse panel, which contains fuses and circuit breakers, is located behind the glove box door. Additional fuses are in the Power Distribution Center located near the left side strut tower in the engine compartment. Each item is identified on the cover of the Power Distribution Center.

There is an additional relay module (relay and flasher module) located to the right lower corner of the instrument panel (Dynasty, Imperial and Fifth Ave.) or behind the cup holder (New Yorker). A relay or flasher can be removed by pulling it straight down from the module.
