Question about 1997 Ford Escort

1 Answer

Escort 1 6 zetec engine revs high when stationary and tries to run away when driving. Have checked the throttle linkage, and all is moving as it should be. If the throttle is blipped it acts as if it has got a couple of seconds time lag before engine responds to throttle blip. All electrical connections are sound, and clean and dry (no signs of water ingress). No tight spots on accelerator linkage or cable, throttle return spring working as it should be. Sometimes when driving down road, car will suddenly try to accelerate away, having to physically brake to control vehicle speed, other times engine will just rev up with no human intervention at all when car is just left to idle on its own. This has totally baffled me. Could anyone throw any possible light as what to check next. Thanks

I think the problem is the idle\air control module if you have one take it out and clean it. the idle module works when your vehicle is idleing. A clogged throttle body or intake would cause the module to compensate for the problem by allowing air in and around the throttle body bypassing it. so i think some thing in the intake system is clogged.

1996 Ford Ranger SuperCab every time I crank my ranger, the engine rev really high. After running for a couple minutes, it begins to slow down to idle speed. Also, if the vehicle is put in gear while high...

With out a check engine code there could be few things that can do this, clean the mass air flow sensor, check your engine air cleaner and then if this doesn't help, have someone start the car while you watch the throttle linkages, after it warms up watch which linkage moves when the engine speed drops this will be connected to the problem sensor / auto choke. Try unplugging it to see if it helps before you go out and buy a new one.
I hope this helps

Engine idle/running speeds sometimes excessive

You have a throttle problem (it gets stuck) take it to a mechanic and have it cleaned and greased up and that should solve your problem.

Engine runs very poor when it gets hot

it has a sensor problem or a blocked air filter ?' if its a sensor then its most likely to be the one on the other side of the throttle linkage

Engine runs on when driving along

Sounds like the choke is sticking on, that would also explain the heavy fuel consumption

Engine revs to high

You definitly have to check the cable installation/adjustment. Remove the air cleaner and with the engine off, advance the throttle to full open and then let it snap closed. The throttle plate should come completely closed. Also check your linkage to make sure that the progressive linkage is not hanging on the high steps oft the choke linkage. This could also have been affected by the cable installation.

Question, did the problem occur after the cable installation? If so, this is the area of your problem.

Ford tick over problem

Hi there!

A few more things to check for you.-

A vacuum leak in any of the vacuum hoses will cause the ECU to make random guesses at what's going on.

Have you replaced plugs recently - or at all? This is probably the main cause - and certainly worth a try.

Fuel filter should be replaced at recommended intervals - about 3 years.

Clean your leads and HT gear really well with a degreasant. Any losses will be more noticable at tickover than high revs.

Lastly.........wear on cam lobes or timing belt.

Hope it's cheap for you!
Please spare a moment to rate as fixya! if any of this information proves useful. Thanks (I don't get paid for this)
