93 Jeep Cherokee - steering problems

My mothers 93 jeep cherokee is having a major problem turning to the left. The steering wheel turns about 1/2 full circle or 180 degrees when turning to the left. If its a sharp turn I have to back up until I can get into where I'm going. Also the steering wheel is "floating " counterclockwise at the rate of about 1/8 an inch daily I estimate. I noticed this when I was driving and the steering wheel was upside down going straight down the road about 2 weeks or so ago and now it has come on around straight again and is progressively going around again. There is no movement in the steering wheel itself. Its tight. Please help!

Check both front wheels with the steering wheel centered. One or both may appear to be pointing in the wrong direction slightly. Check both sleeves on the tie rod ends to make sure they are tight and not able to turn. (adjustment sleeves are slightly different than on most cars. One sleeve extends from the drivers side across the front and is about 21/2' long the other is shorter and is about 5" to the passenger side of the pitman arm on the steering box. If either moves, turn it 'till the wheels are fairly straight, tighten the bolts that are on the clamp around the slotted tube, and bring it to an alignment shop and have the toe in re-set.
A condition such as this is nothing to mess with. loss of steering is extremely dangerous.

Wheels will not turn when steering wheels are turned

Pretty doubtful it is your steering column. When all the junk around it is stripped away, it is a simple steel shaft that connects the steering wheel to the steering box.
You can do what no one online can do for you...Have someone turn the wheel and look at what is moving and what is not. Likely it's something major like the steering box or the chassis where the box is mounted that has failed. Whatever it turns out to be, it's likely to be obviously broken. (easier to find than a squeak or slight noise.
When you find it, ask if you need help with the repair procedure!!!
Good luck!!

MY LEFT TURN SIGNAL WILL ONLY WORK INTERMITANTLY. FLASHERS WORK BULBS ARE GOOD. AND I HAVE CHANGED THE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH AND STILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. THIS IS ON A 1999 JEEP GRANDE CHEROKEE LIMITED

It could be your clock sensor, or (Also known as) steering squib, it is located in the steering wheel, it can also cause intermittent air bag light warning, cruise control, radio control malfunction of steering wheel controls. It can also cause the horn not to work. If you have any of the other symptoms I would suggest this is your problem.

Steering problems

The Obvious: You have something broken in the front end. What to do: get yourself under there and take a look at everything. Anything that looks amiss probably is. Jack both front wheels off the ground... lie down where the vehicle can't fall on you and have someone turn the wheels back and forth. Look and see what's preventing travel. If it's that bad, it shouldn't be that hard to find!
