Question about 1998 Ford Explorer

2 Answers

My gas tank is full, but gas isn't going thru the fuel pump.

My car won't start, I thought it was the battery. I charged the battery, but it still won't start. We found that fuel pump is empty.

Its a 98 Ford Explorer Sport. I use Cheveron Plus gas. I'll listen for a click.

Not sure if this is relevant but a few months ago I lost my gas cap and my check engine light came on. I got it replaced, It seems like ever since that has happened I have to warm up my car alot longer than usual or it stalls. Thanx for such awesome advice!

Maybe the petrol/deisel tank is to, you may have a leak or spill somewhere between tank and engine,.What make is it,and what fuel does it run on,.

I guess the real question is did it run properly before you lost the gas cap,you say that after you got it replaced you got an engine warning light, sounds to me as if there may be a scensor on the cap that alerts you to drving away with the gas cap not fitted correctly or not fitted at all,and this may in turn affect the running of the vehicle ,am not up on the type of vehicle you have but simple elimiation makes the issue with the cap something to think about, apart from that,a simple fuel obstruction maybe an inline fuel filter,so hope this helps

98 ford windstar van ran out of gas and now wont start even after refueling.

To review - - the fuel pump in the tank pumps fuel to the injectors.
There is a fuel shut-off which works in a wreck to prevent a fire.
If the plunger is down, the switch is on. Normal.

It is possible the fuel lines are full of air which would take a long time to purge by cranking the engine. Sometimes you have to use starting fluid or other means to "run" the engine long enough to get gas back into the injectors.
As long as the engine cranks, the battery is fine.
It is also possible the pump was damaged when the tank was run empty. The pump uses liquid fuel to cool and lubricate the electric pump. It can overheat when running the tank below 1/4 full.
It is also possible the fuel filter was clogged with junk from the bottom of the tank.
I would get someone to check for fuel pressure at the injectors and try some carb cleaner or starting fluid in the intake hose next.

2004 buick century gas gage not working

Most likely a defective fuel level sending unit, located inside the tank connected to fuel pump assembly. Theres a possibility that you have a ground issue. So check that first as its easier. If the grounds check out then you have a few options. 1. Pull the fuel pump assembly and clean off the fuel level sender(tons of tutorials online for this). This fixed my problem for 10 months until my pump went out. 2. Replace just the fuel level sender. 3. Replace the entire fuel pump assembly (which should include sender and fuel pressure sensor). And a couple notes. If you have around 100K or more miles then DEFINITELY change the entire assembly. It beats having to do all the work again in the near future. No matter what route you go be sure to replace the fuel pump tank gasket.

My '97 GMC Jimmy was running fine one day and then wouldn't start the next. The battery is fully charged, the engine turns over when the ignition key is turned, but it just won't catch....

TURN THE KEY SWITCH TO THE ON POSITION ,WITH THE GAS LID DOOR OPEN DO YOU HEAR THE HUMM OR WHINE OF THE FUEL PUMP,YOU MAY HAVE TO GET A 2 PERSON SO THAT YOU CAN PUT YOUR EAR RIGHT UP TO THE FUEL DOOR TO HEAR THE HUM,IF THEIRS NO HUM ITS NOT GOING TO START.THE TANK THEN MUST BE REMOVED AND A NEW 250$ FUEL PUMP WILL NEED TO BE INSTALLED.THE PUMPS ARE ALSO DIFFERENT BETWEEN 2DR AND 4DR. EBAY HAS CHEEP PUMPS 100 OR LESS.

1999 pontiac grand prix, just sputtered out...thought it was out of gas, but put gas in and it still won't start. it triess to turn over, but does not click and all lights/radio come on. what is it?

make sure the battery is fully charged,, if the alternator isn't working right , everything is run off the battery for a short time, and it will just die , the lights and other functions like the radio require little voltage to work, so try that first, if it turns over fast ,, then you need to check for fuel, if the pump is weak, it could be not enough pressure to keep the car running

Car has been sitting; will turn over but won't start. Used starting fluid and car starts but quits. Won't fire without starting fluid. There is fuel in the tank. Help!!

My first thought is to check the fuel pump operation.
Check to see if fuel pump is getting power.

This is how I check the pump.

Usually there is an in-line fuel filter that can be removed.
While its removed...bump the starter to see if gas shoots out the gas line.
If not, there might be a clog at the pump...or the pump needs replacing.

Hope this helps...

Why wont my pt cruser start it died will turn over

It sounds like you might have multiple problems. First you need the car with a starring system that will start the car. If your battery goes dead right away, first check your battery, charge it up and test it. Or put a different battery in the car to test it. You also may have a problem with your charging system so check that too. Once the car will crank fast without slowing down you should be able to start the engine. If this is not the case, poor little gas down the throttle body or intake manifold. Now if it starts and dies out you probably have a fuel problem. Check for fuel pressure on your fuel rail first. Then check fuel pump and relays. Now if the car did not start, check for spark. If spark seems to be good checked the timing belt or timing chain. Good luck.

My p.t.cruiser has been standing for 8 months battery has a full charge but it will not turn over (CAR IS 2000 MODEL) had jump start no go had tow no go gas tank is full all lights work but no it wont...

Did you use the fuel that was sitting in there for 8 months? If so, you probably clogged something in the fuel system. Either the fuel filter, the injectors, or the filter on the fuel pump itself.

Jeep won;t start..new fuel pump installed

try the fuel filter and make sure you have proper oil pressure!! Remeber if you have tried craking to many bad times then the plugs are going to be fouled out!! Means that they are going to be drowned with gas and need replacing!! Also make sure your fuel pump is coming on!! You should hear a hissin or a hummin noise back from the fuel tank!
