2002 Duramax with high miles, 335k. Truck was running fine then on the way out of the driveway heard a loud "pop", engine lost power but continued to run. Now, I hear a turbo whine I didnt hear before when the RPM's are up a bit, the truck will only start with starting fluid, and won't run over about 45mph. Any ideas where I should start looking?

Start at the turbo and check for loose or blown air lines . Check the intercooler for cracks. The turbo whine is normal but you would not be hearing it as the turbo is controlled to vary the amount of boost needed for the throttle setting. If you have to use starting fluid to start a diesel then it is time to consider a re-ring and bearings for the engine.

I'm not new to diesels, but definitely new to Duramax. I just got this truck, as is, and made a quick inspection of all the turbo lines but didn't see anything obvious, I'll look again. I understand that low compression but will cause the no start but my understanding is this truck started fine until this incident, and they didn't hear this particular turbo whine until after it happened either. Appreciate the reply, I'll look closer at the air intake system.

SOURCE: Chevrolet 2500 Not Running, May Be Fuel Filter Sensor

That red wire is only for the fuel heater.will not cause a no start.try pumping the primer pump on top of the fuel flter hsg. but first open the bleed screw, which is black plastic also located on the top.this will eliminate any trapped air that might have entered the fuel intake system.if the pump does not get firmer and harder to push, then you have a leak in the fuel supply lines or the ck valves in the fuel filter hsg or stuck open. Still no start have it scanned to ck fuel pressure while cranking.it should be close to 5000 lbs

SOURCE: 1994 chev truck 6.5 turbo diesel with long hard

There is a cold start solonoid in the injection pump on the 92&93's. this will cause a hard start, and run poorly till warms up. It does something with the presure in pump which advances it.

SOURCE: I have a 2004 Chevy

Thanks for choosing Fixya and welcome to the site. It sounds like you have low compression in the engine. First, let me ask this. Is your check engine light on?

OBDII Codes 2006 Chevy 2500HD w/ 6.6L Duramax "Truck started losing power when warm, when cold for the first 10 miles or so the trunk runs great."

You need a dealer, there is a real problem going on here, way over the head of any home do it yourselfer. The main reason is the special tools required to interface with the control modules that are throwing these codes

I have a 1996 GMC Sierra 4X4 truck, have had a harsh 1/2 shift after 8-12miles of driving. Yesterday started engine put in drive accelerated slowly turning out of driveway felt/heard loud mechanical clang...

Hey Dennis.
Opppsss.. was this transmission serviced regularly?..no, ok.. this is a common problem, you will need to take it to s QUALIFIED PROFESSIONAL to get the trans rebuilt..
If you live near a local drag strip, go there, ask the drag race mechanics who the best transmission man there is?? There is always one or two the drag racers relay on.. I would trust him to get it done right (BEFORE I would trust a "chain" transmission store!!!!!)
I, personally, have had two transmissions do this.. one a 96 suburban and a 95 Silverado.(both inherited and never serviced).. I found the guy that did mine this same way.. GLAD I DID.. it was less $$$$ and great work!! If no drag strip.. ask the custom car guys...

Loud valve tap? sounds like a diesel motor...

-Open valve cover and check it out. It's bend or out of adjustment. If it's bend then has to replace the valve
that make noise. If it's out of adjust or gap is too wide
then just adjust to the correct gap. you should be good to go.

Good Luck

Usually what causes this is your reverse clutch is worn out in the transmission, or there is a bad valve

02 silverado 2500 duramax- loss of power steering/brakes

I know GM decided to run the brakes and power steering vacumm all off of the power steering pump on some of their trucks. This could really be a big problem because if your power steering quit it would stop supplying your brakes with vacuum to stop the truck. In my experience I would check out the situation with the steering pump. Change it for a new one. Don't take any chances on smashing your truck.

Knock in engine

the best advice i can give you is take it back to the dealer and let them know of the problem and see if they will fix it since you still have warrenty. because if something catastrophic happens you would be out all of that money.
