does the engine always restart?, does this happen all the time? cold or hot engine? any system trouble codes present in memory? Check engine light on?

Most likely ETC Electronic Throttle Control. Some cars with this problem will run in drive but stall in reverse. Some will occasionally run but stall at stop signs or traffic lights.

Run the Diagnostic test to check for error codes by doing the following:

To check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes stored in the computer, turn the
ignition on, then hold down the OFF and WARMER (for digital dash) or
OFF and passenger-WARMER buttons (for analog dash) or OFF and "Info ^"
buttons (if you have temperature dials) until all of the dash lights
come on. The digital display will then show any codes stored. Be
prepared to write them down. When it's done, you will probably see
"PCM?" At that point, press the OFF button 3 or 4 times until the dash
goes back to normal, or just turn off the ignition.

Post back with any error codes you got.

Why would my1998 nissan quest dies when put in drive?

on some automatics it can be a map sensor fault of a MAF sensor fault. you would really need the codes to be read. but if you remove the MAF sensor and it drives there is your fault. might just need cleaning with MAF cleaner to sort it out there are videos to help you do this without damaging the sensor.

Car idles ok , put car in drive it wants to die

Could be fuel or ignition. When is the last time you changed the fuel filter? I would start with a fuel pressure test.

Was starting and running fine went to go somewhere went out it started put it in reverse and it sputtered and died won't start now

suggest that you check the idle control sensor, the silver canister that's next to the intake,, on top of motor where the [old type carberator] type engines were hope this helps!!!

Car will not start in park, but will start in neutrel. Car will die as soon as you put it in reverse.

have your neutral safety switch checked or adjusted. if engine dies as soon as it is shifted to reverse, does it so the same when you shift it to drive? if on reverse only, idle is set too low.
