Causes of low battery voltage and solution

My 2001 Volvo S60 keeps showing "Low Battery Voltage" and the battery is not charging. What could be responsible and how do I rectify the problem?

I have solved the problem. It turned out that the voltage regulator, which is an integral part of the alternator, was faulty. We had to replace the entire alternator since we could not change the voltage regulator in isolation. The challenge was getting the right alternator! The car is performing beautifully now! Many thanks to you guys for your help and concern. Thanks alot!

I had the same problem with my dash saying battery voltage low and the problem was my alternator. took it to the dealership and it cost me $400.00 to replace a connector on the alternator because for my year car a (2002) they don't replace entire alternator.

Have the battery checked. If good, check alternator output and drivebelt condition and for slipping. Change whatever comes up as bad (check alt for output even if battery is not good.)

New Battery low voltage issue

If the alternator light is on there is a problem in the charging system. Have a local Autozone or O'reilly auto parts test it when the light is on, do not have the test run unless the light is on. I think you have a defective alternator but the meeting should confirm this.

Headlight wiring low voltage

A battery's voltage is properly tested under load. This sounds like your battery is low on fluid or has not been charging properly. Not charging properly could be from low battery fluid, poor cable connections or a failing alternator. You did not state whether you tested this voltage issue with the vehicle running or not. If the vehicle was running when you observed this change in voltage upon turning on the headlights, then a bad alternator is most certainly suspect.

Battery not charging, alternator seem to putting

11.50 volts won't be enough potential to overcome the batteries 12 volt standing charge.

Either your alternator is shot...which you can check by going to an Autozone and having a free system check. Or your battery is already going bad and not sending enough voltage to the alternator to make the 13.8-15.8 volts it should be making.

If the alternator is the culprit a good mechanic will swap it out for a fairly low price and save you a lot of headaches.

Good luck and be careful.

Low battery voltage light battery won't hold charge 2002 S60

Yup, time for a new alternator. Most models have the regulator built into the alternator, so it makes it a little bit more expensive - but it will resolve your problems. If you are driving at night with a load on your charging system (lights and radio on), you will probably notice you have dim headlights. If you don't change it soon, you'll end up having to replace your battery too.
