Question about 1989 Toyota Camry

1 Answer

1990 camry 4cyl. motor turns over but will not start. has 105,000 miles on it. I have pulled the plugs out and they are firing. Gas tank is full. Have unplugged and reconnected all connections for the electrical portion of the distributor. If the coil was bad would it still be firing or could it be a weak firing to the plugs, I have replaced the spark plugs and am just puzzled to what it could be please Help

No, but come to think about it I don't think I've ever really listened for it , is it that loud of a noise.

  • 2beatles Apr 18, 2009

no nothing like that, is there a fuse in the fuse box that could have gone bad.

  • 2beatles Apr 18, 2009

2Beatles@carolina.rr.com my car has three fuse boxes one under the hood driver side and one on the driver seat side and one on the passanger side the main two are under the hood and the driver side the one is for the air cond. which is on the passenger side all fuses seem to be OK

  • 2beatles Apr 18, 2009

got the seat out and am now doing what you said.

  • 2beatles Apr 18, 2009

Yes there is a panel and 4 small wires going to it and about 5 small screws hold a plate down.

  • 2beatles Apr 18, 2009

I have tapped on it why the wife turns the key on and off still no sound noise from the pump.

  • Dennis Yachimec May 11, 2010

Remove the panel and see if there is a black electrical connector in center of fuel pump plate. Tap with a small hammer on fuel pump plate and then turn the key on and see if the fuel pump kicks in. Do not disconnect anything when you take off first plate. Usually when you tap with a small hammer the fuel pump will get going. If this happens fuel pump will have to be replaced.

  • Dennis Yachimec May 11, 2010

Try removing bottom of rear seat. See if there access panel for fuel pump.

  • Dennis Yachimec May 11, 2010

Underneath the hood on the passenger side wheelwell should be a fuse box. Lift off cover and should be a diagram under there for the fuses. Check fuel pump fuse with a test light. If fuse is okay remove lower part of back seat and there should be a little removable panel behind drivers seat. Remove cover and try tapping with small hammer around fuel pump but do not hit connector.

Try turning the key on and see if the fuel pump kicks in. I am going by a 1992 manual and if you need more information or pictures please send me your email address along with what you need.

  • Dennis Yachimec May 11, 2010

As soon as you turn the key on you should hear a whinning noise in the fuel tank. It only lasts for about 3 to 5 seconds.

  • Dennis Yachimec May 11, 2010

When you turn the key on can you hear the fuel pump pumping?

Generally coils either fire or they dont fire. when cranking the engine be sure you rocker arms are moving. to see if your timing belt is not broke or stripped.

Bad gas miles

I would try changing the oxygen sensors, they are required to be changed each time you do a tune up also if you purchase a K&N air cleaner you will get much better gas miliage.

After getting gasoline, it increases wrong mileage with camry 2003

One tank of gas is not enough to compare mileage. Or are you saying the computer's readout of mpg estimate is showing less? Try a tank or two of premium and see if that helps. Keep track of gas mileage. Driving techniques have a lot to do with gas mileage, as does long trips vs. short trips, highway cruising vs. city driving. For best mileage, do regular maintenance and keep the car in top running condition-good spark plugs and clean filters and clean oil ! Attend to minor problems before they escalate.
If you want to check actual miles per gallon, start with a full tank. Write the odometer reading down, and go. Everytime you put gas in, write down the amount. When you are close to 1,000 miles from the time you started, go fill the tank and include that amount of gas to your previous list. Now add up all the gas used and divide it into the miles to get miles per gallon. (976 miles/31.8 gallons = 30.69 mpg ) . Only one tank will skew your numbers, might be off cause the tank was filled more to the top than the previous fill-up. About a thousand miles of driving will give you a very accurate figure of miles per gallon for your car.

I have a 92 camry 4cyl. Won't fire at the sparkplug. Replaced plug wires and plugs, distributor, igniter and still won't fire. Any suggestions?

Take out a spark plug, lay the plug (with the spark plug wire attached)on the engine and turn the motor over, if it sparks, your getting fire, Try each plug, works best a night so you can see the spark.

1990 camry 4cyl 270k miles intermittant rough idle

Sounds like you have an intermittant problem, check all your wirirng, then you can move on to ignition related coil reluctor wheel ( in side the distribitor electronic control module again inside the distribitor. It could also be a fuel system problem do you hear the fuel pump come on when you turn on the key, the fuel pump should cycle until it devlops adequate pressure ( usually 3 - 4 seconds)

1990 toyota camry gas gauge quit working

Either fuel sensor is bad or coated with sulfur residue from inferior gas. Try a can of Sea Foam gas treatment OR can of Techuron concentrate. Both available at auto parts and , of course, Walmart ! Add to full gas tank, drive 75 - 100 miles and see if all is well. If not, condide4 sensor change
