I have a 2000 safari van... How often do you change the timing belt. It has 238,000 kms on it now.

Thanks so much... Quick question then... I know I am overdue for the change in the chain...only because I heard it from someone else.. But would my car be sounding different or running differently...

Can you let me know on that one..

    And again thanks.

Likely you have a chain, not a belt. You are due. The chain will not break but it will develop enolugh slack to permit it to ride up on the cam gear and damage it. When replacing use a steel chain gear and new chain...lower gear is pretty much optional. New one will last longer than your vehicle. Make sure you get a manual though unless you have done this before...If not indexed correctly it will not run.
good luck

Likely not. It will just stop....I changed someones oil once and the chain let go backing out of the shop (great place to fail, but try explaining to a customer that his well running car is now broken, and I didn't do it!).

With like around 110K miles or your 238 km, it it past time to change it, although many people don't. Should have been changed earlier. Don't want any bent valves, etc. Hope this helps you, Rick

After how many kms must the timing belt and alternator belt be changed to avoid damages to the engine

All ways go by the drivers manual to be safe. You will find they very from around 50 to 100 kms for the timing belt, the alternator belt is generally separate to the timing belt and needs to be changed when noise or signs of damage show .

My Gmc safari van will not run. It will turn but no fire.

It very well could be the rotor or cap isn't secure. The rotor should have spun until it was seated. It's also common for the cap to clip into place but not be properly seated. This would prevent spark which would be your issue with the van not firing up.

When should you replace timing belt on Toyota Sienna van? It's a 1999 model with 210,000 kms on it and I need a new water pump. Should I replace the timing belt at the same time?

Somewhere between 90,000 mil;es and 120,000 miles you should do your timing belt. But first make sure you do not have a timg chain. If you have a timing chain, you never have to change it at all.

HOW TO CHANGE THE WATER PUMP

There isn't really an easy way, as the water pump is driven by the timing belt, requiring removal of the timing covers, timing belt etc to replace. This is definitely a job for a mechanic, or at least a skilled handyman with a lot of experience with timing belt replacement. The timing belt and tensioner will need to be replaced at the same time, but at least then you know that it will not need to done again for 100,000 kms (60,000 miles).
